Mepps on the surface it was only about 5' viz, dive down about 15' and it opened up to around 10'-12' viz

Re: 2015 Fresh Water Nationals
Thanks for the pictures
Time to talk about dates to host a meet there and make sure we are not over lapping some big bass tournament. Should we make this a 1 day or 2 day meet? 2 day at Keyhole too much? Should we make one day rough fish and one day game fish? Should we exclude any fish species so as not to piss off fishermen? Lets look at the big pictures then focus on details and who can best handle each detail to make this a top meet that divers will want to come to from around the Nation. |

We have taken the Keyhole conversation to a private level to work directly with the key divers -shops -vendors in the region that can help pull this off.
Please send me your email to get in this conversation and help with all the little jobs that need to be done. Mike McGuire anyh2o@hughes.net Everyone is welcome and need to make this first class. |

Re: 2015 Fresh Water Nationals
RMSA website says Nationals at Keyhole June 5th and 6th. If anyone is driving from or around SLC, UT I would be down to car pool, help with gas, etc. I think it is about 9 hour drive from SLC.

Re: 2015 Fresh Water Nationals
I just wanna say, "Its; not really my fault that I'm such an asshole" (genetics are hard to overcome) but..........
I'm not sure that Keyhole was the best choice. First; viz has been quite good the last several years since it's been so full. But I've hit it at other times when it sucked. Bad. As in can't see fish until you've bumped them. Odds are likely in the tournament's favor in this regard, as long as levels stay high, which I expect they will. But even with high water, some days flat out suck. Say, one-in-five odds of bust. Second, I haven't speared by any means the entire lake, but...... Generally, the only truly truly dependable viz is on the face of the dam. Some of the cliff faces can be pretty good as well, but...... None of the spots I have dove produce more than about 30-40% of the fish that the dam face produces. I can cover the whole dam reasonably well in about 3-4 hours of diving. I don't know how many teams will make the meet, but I think that a half dozen people spread out on the dam would be a lot. So I suspect that a tournament may mostly be a race to clean out he riprap on the dam. And then what?...... On the plus side; there are a lot of game fish. I wish I had had a Go-Pro with me a couple times this last summer. Also, camping facilities are well-developed and nice. They do get pretty full, but early June should be ahead of the main summer rush. |

Re: 2015 Fresh Water Nationals
I'm not sure how much time Mepps has spent diving Keyhole the last few years but I have only had 1 dive that vis was poor, windy crappy day and this is the lake I primarily dive. I have dove most of the lake, dove the dam, it was never poor, cliff faces and a lot of the coves on the north side of the lake and always had 10'+ On the worst of days. Mepps I know you mentioned a few other places early on in the conversation but I think Keyhole will turn out a great tournament, between the game fish and Carp, and early season always has the best vis throughout the lake and like you mentioned camping facilities are nice and we are getting a lot of local support to hold it. To me June 4th-6th can't come soon enough. www.spearfishingkeyhole.com is the tournament website as well as Facebook.com/2015nationals

Yeah that's a guy I know, Husker and I have pulled some nice ones out recently too, and they have been catching some hog walleye through the ice already.

Re: 2015 Fresh Water Nationals
We have been fishing the south side of the lake, and as far as I know there is still open water over there, the West side of the lake had 6" a few days ago but we have had some warm weather, there has been some nice fish caught through the ice already this year. One of the biggest walleyes i've seen come out of the lake was caught and released in through the ice.
