Wasted length

So I have an Andre wood gun and I am coming from a reverse trigger Sea Sniper. My issue is that there is alot of space wasted at the tip and rear, so the effective length is several inches less than it could be. I didn't consider this when I bought it, so just wondering if it serves any purpose to have the extra overhang or if it's ok to modify it and move the band slots closer to the tip?

Re: Wasted length

Band Stretch has been called king.. but I would say balance is King. That extra bit of Muzzle might let the gun shoot smooth. Could you cut off some of the muzzle and reshape the gun or cut off the back end? probably.. moving the band slot forward can be done. But before any of this maybe try shooting the gun a bit. That extra bit of meat might allow you to load your bands a little tighter.

That being said, My own personal guns have been cut up, changed, added to, subtracted from, and yes.. I do have some where I maxed out the band stretch on older guns. So if you are a good woodworker and don't plan to sell the gun as new later, have a go. You make a Dowel to match the radius of the Band Slot, epoxy it in place, then Redrill/Mill the Bandslot forward. You could even move the mech back and put in a small pushrod, etc.. or move the handle forward. Wood guns can be plugged, rebuilt, cut up reshaped, etc. Just try to keep all your tolerances close and use good epoxy like West Systems G-Flex.

Re: Wasted length

It's rigged with 3 bands, but I've heard 2 might actually work better with higher accuracy, thoughts ?

Re: Wasted length

What the gun? Length, Shaft diameter, Mid Handle, Rear Handle, Reel?

One thing that's often left out of the Ballisitics discussions is style.. I seen guys lately shooting 4 band Rear Handles that defy all the pool testing.. But they are Big dudes, swimming at their targets.. What's your style? Are you a chaser? or a waiter? etc.

It's a 144 Euro model with enclosed track. I use a slip tip, spear is 156 tail to tip and 7mm. Bands are 16mm 24, 25, 26 length I believe. Mid shark fin to slot is about 110cm. My style is stealthy with primary targets being White Sea Bass (Avatar) and California Yellowtail. I have normally been a pretty decent shot, so just frustrating that am having a hard time getting this dialed in. Probably just a case of indian vs arrow, but doesn't hurt to seek some advice on this setup. Thanks much...

Re: Wasted length

I have some experience with that gun.

Find out if a 7.5mm Shaft will fit. If so,
Get rid of the 16mm bands and get 3 14mm or 14.5mm small ID bands and use at @340%. Cut each band to it's specific position in the muzzle and to it's corresponding sharkfin. There should be a 1" difference in the length of each band.

If the track will only fit 9/32", you could use 2 14.5mm Small Id BAnds at 370%+ or 2 x 16mm bands at 340%.

If it really bothered you having that extra band space, you could probably fill that space and use 2 bands with the bands being moved forward.

Just my opinions.

Appreciate the advice, how would you fill the extra band slot if that's what I end up doing?

Re: Wasted length

Take a measure of the diameter of the Band Slot. It's probably 1/2" But I'm not sure if it's in metric. You want it to be an exact measure. Then trace a similar object onto a rectangle of Teak. Then make two parallel lines and measure distance of Bandslot your trying to plug up. Then Drill a hole to match the diameter at the length of the piece of wood. Then cut and sand down so you have a perfect Dowel. The width of the muzzle. Rounded on one end to fit snug into the bandslot and Convex on the other so it forms the new back end of the bandslot. Scuff everything up with 80 grit. Use West Systems G Flex Epoxy and glue it in place. Let sit for a day, then take a dowel like a foam paint brush handle and wrap with 40-60 grit and file out the shapes, higher grit higher grit. make perfect. seal. done. easier than it sounds. Key is to drill the convex on the square rather than once its glued into the muzzle.
