Very short federal ARS season.

According to FB17-023, ARS in federal waters in the GOM opens June 1,2017 and closes June 4,2017 for "private anglers". Yep, a whole big 3 days.

What depth would you find them in that time of year?

Re: Very short federal ARS season.

Last year, they were in as shallow as 40'. However, i think most people would start looking at 100'.

I'm putting my money on 20-25 knots all three days. Add I'll double down by saying that next year NOAA claims recs got 150% of their quota in those conditions.

Re: Very short federal ARS season.

I would like to thank all of the states providing state water seasons essentially screwing us out of any viable federal season. I doubt any math or science was used with their reasoning either. I hope the feds defund cooperative programs with all of them...... including enforcement. If we are going to go full on, child like stupid we may as go all the way so one or the other can be the winner.

So many easy solutions for this but each is too busy being spiteful two year olds to work it out.

Re: Very short federal ARS season.

It's the Feds that are screwing us by overestimating the harvest and underestimating the stock. Alabama has developed their own system that uses mandatory reporting and their numbers for 2015 estimated our landings at less than half (~450,000 lbs) of the Feds estimate (~1,000,000 lbs). I'm not going to claim that Alabama's is perfect, but the federal system has been described as being fatally flawed in multiple aspects, most notable being the sampling methods that don't take artificial reefs into account.

I agree with you, science is being ignored but it's not the states who are doing the ignoring.
