2018's Red Grouper season is 2 mths>Fl fed east coast waters

One of the items out of the SAFMC meeting was the expected short 2 month season for Red Grouper in Fed waters for 2018.

Around Jup/WPB I'll see a handful of legal ones each year when they sneak up to see us catching bugs or lions. If you thought hogs were dumb, Red Grouper will stick their face in your bag to see what you caught. The rule isn't final but something is coming down the pipe.

Hopefully, a complete closure. Those things might as well be extinct for as many as I see.

Where do you dive out of?

In certain areas I dive down in the Keys they are VERY plentiful.

Maybe I should have been more clear, for the amount of LEGAL ones I see, they might as well be extinct. I dive everywhere from Sebastian to the Keys and over on the W coast in the Gulf.

I see about a quarter of what I used to even 10 yrs ago.
Daytona to Wilmington 80 feet to 180.

Hmm. I agree that there isn't much on the main reef line. I see a majority of them on small patch reefs north of the reef. Areas out west you can literally shoot a 10 pounder on almost everyone. It gets to the point where I start passing them up since I feel bad since they aren't the brightest.

Personally I wouldn't like to see a 2 month season for them, because that would mean a 2 month season would be right around the corner for Gag and Black Grouper. The closure has has helped the grouper population in the keys, but I wouldn't really want to see it get any longer.

With the amount of sharks that are out there every grouper species is going to take a hit. Its very easy to see there is a imbalance when you see 5 grouper and 15 sharks in a day in a area that you used to 15 grouper and 1 shark.

I agree that restrictions need to be tightened, and has been said, they are dumber than a bag of rocks, which leads to their ultimate demise, so I am looking forward to increased restrictions for this species.

Re: 2018's Red Grouper season is 2 mths>Fl fed east coast waters

I have not spearfished as long as many of the older members here but I have spearfished and fished long enough to know that fishing regulations are getting more strict as time passes. I can only imagine how many species are going to be prohibited from keeping and how many strict size/number of fish kept regulations are going to exist 10 years from now. There are plenty of fish that have very healthy populations, yet they are prohibited from keeping or have extremely strict regulations to the point you can barely keep those types of fish. I feel sorry for the next generation that will have to endure these regulations, and I am thankful that I at least got to keep lots of quality fish, lobster, etc in the +20 years I have been fishing.
