Re: Going to Costa Rica, questions.
I didn't get to spear but did some scuba out of Quepos at the island not far from town. Was great vis and lots of life. Hard lava bottom and quite a bit of current.

Re: Going to Costa Rica, questions.
Bumping this thread. Costa Rica is headed into their wet season on the pacific coast right now. Shore diving grinds down to almost undiveable conditions because of the flow of estuaries into the ocean. That being said there is lots of shore diving and charters off the Nicoya peninsula.

Re: Going to Costa Rica, questions.
rooster fish should be protected but it takes time..
a 20$ fishing licence (annual) may be usefull if offshore hunting

Re: Going to Costa Rica, questions.
Roosterfish are considered to be a sportfish and are the mainstay of the sportfishing business and are actually a protected catch-and-release species. I understand you can get fines for taking them. Unfortunately spearfishing is not a catch and release sport so be careful. They are plentiful in many areas and are strong fighting pelagic jacks. So-so eating especially if they are not gilled.

Re: Going to Costa Rica, questions.
ANY fish can be considered a game fish. I don't see a problem to harvest them as soon as they are:
1. Legal 2. Big enough to have completed one reproductory cicle 3. Going to be eaten Is MHO

Re: Going to Costa Rica, questions.
Technically, it is rainy season, but at least in Guanacaste, the rain doesn't get really bad until September and October (and November this year). I wouldn't hesitate to make a trip in June or July. It won't be as crowded and lodging will generally be a bit cheaper. If it rains at all it's usually only for a short time in the afternoon.
