Reel rigging options?

What is everyones favorite method of rigging a speargun reel? I just finished this pathos build which is my first reel gun and considered several different options for the line to reel connection and went with the standard shock bungie and a double wrap giving me 19 feet of shooting line total. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Reel rigging options?

I personally prefer a simple swivel bungee between mono and reel line.
But often I use nothing at all to keep things as simple as possible.
The swivel bungee has the advantage that there is stretch in your line making it easier to load the last strand over your line release. You don’t have to give slack and retention the reel as you would without the bungee.

I use the slipknot described below since you can undo it quickly. It has never failed.

The handle looks better than before. Did you remove some polymorph plastic? Which reel did you use?
Why did you put some tubing over the bungee clip, it seems unnecessary?

Re: Reel rigging options?

You don't need a bungee when using reel. And it is an additional piece to fail or tangle.

Additionally, I never rig two wraps as I'll never shoot a fish that far, takes for ever to reload and if you shoot a fish in caves/rocks, the possibillity for it to hole up is very, very high.

This being said, double wrap is a personal preference. I like to get close to the fish.

The only situation where I would use double wrap would be in blue water. And I don't.

Interesting point about not needing a bungee for a reel. Makes sense even though I've always used one just out of habit. A general rule of thumb in rigging is the fewer connection points the better. A simple slip knot or bowline knot will work for connecting your reel line to the reel itself. The number of wraps is up to you and how long you expect your shots to be. The fewer wraps the easier to load, but I personally use 2.

Re: Reel rigging options?

I do it a little differently. I don't like to run my reel line through the front line guide for two reasons. One, it creates a potential for increased tangles. Especially if you are using anything like that Bungee.. Wot happens is a fish comes 6' away. You shoot. The Spear slows in the fish and the whole release of your shooing line is delayed. The Metal parts of that connection cause it to sink and then as the fish takes off you get a tangle. Two. It get's your reel line right next to those sticky things (bands) and if you accidentally turn your gun while fighting the fish it can tangle up.

So I just run my reel line back directly from the reel and connect it to the shooting line between reel and line release. Ofcourse this requires a Robust Reel..

Also that will shorten your shooting line by @ 3-4' which seems more appropriate anyways.

Check this video I just uploaded. It's a single wrap on a 125 roller I assembled. Tell me if you can take longer shots. I can't!

Well 125 x 3 equals about 12 feet (wrap length plus spear) and that is where most fish are shot. Bigger fish, bigger target at distance, hence more chance of hitting it. Noticed a kebab shot near the end, makes it harder to get the fish off. I nearly always use screw on tips, kill the fish, unscrew the tip and pull the fish off. Push a spike through its head and that has a cable tether on it, so it is going nowhere. Put the tip in my glove if I look like dropping it. Once on a dare shot a garfish at nearly 12 feet just to show that it could be done, more ass than class however and a lucky shot, nearly cut it in two.
