Re: best boat under 20 feet
Go for a cat if you could find one. Very stable, they can handle some weather, the fuel economy is usually great and they trailer easy in the size you are looking at.
Good luck |

Re: best boat under 20 feet
Given your price range i would say your best bet will be:
Hobie Power Skiff Inflatable Livingston Skiff Bayrunner Now if your budget was a little more you might want to look at: Greenough 17 18ft Whaler (Outrage) Arima 16ft Radoncraft (if you can find one) 18ft Parker Last edited by sbsurfer; 02-19-2013 at 03:11 PM. |

Re: best boat under 20 feet
Not the "best" overall, but just throwing this out there...Valco 14', 30hp Johnson, hand tiller. We throw it on top of the truck and go to Baja, where tough dirt roads and a lack of nice launches make trailers a hassle. Lightweight, low maintenance. Recommended by the studs that wrote "Baja Catch" (best book ever in my opinion). Not the fastest and range is sort of limited, but we love it as the poor man's option.

Re: best boat under 20 feet
parers are nice basic boats. the factory is about 15 min from my house.
I have a huge infatuation with the montauk... the whalers are IMHO the best small boats ever produced.. |

Whalers are over rated in my opinion. Get a Cape Horn

Re: best boat under 20 feet
I was going to buy a 19 Carolina Skiff package. They run in very shallow water and can be customized with all sorts of decks, consoles, platforms, etc.I ended up buying the 21 DLV with a 140 Suzuki.Cheap price and cheap to run!I added a 80#thrust riptide trolling motor,Taco leaning post and LED lights a few years later as money permitted. If money isnt an issue get a cat. They run fast in nasty chops and are economical on fuel.

What do you guys think about a Robalo? I have a neighbor with one that he is selling and I am considering. Pros and cons? Not sure of the model.

Re: best boat under 20 feet
robalo is a pretty good boat. They were pretty expensive back in when they were popular.
I am actually looking at one right now... there are better boats, but they are not bad at all. Kapthook..... The older whalers are not overrated.. they are just bulletproof basic boats. they hull design is a good all around design, the layout is nice.. the build quality is fantastic. |

Re: best boat under 20 feet
Robalo are great boats but a little heavy compared to similar size boats. They used a lot of glass so they were solid boats. They ride nice but take a little more fuel to push on the older models.Hydrasport made a pretty solid and dry boat.I sold them and the new Seacrafts in the 90s.

Re: best boat under 20 feet
i thought i was in the same boat.... but this deal was too good to pass up.
i had planned not to get another boat until we got our 40ish foot sailboat, but the 17 foot motorboat just is not cutting it for the summer, so i decided to get the robalo and use it until we get the sailboat, i'll sell it then, and i think we can get what we paid for it out of it. |

Re: best boat under 20 feet
Like all types of boats, the best one is any boat belonging to someone else
