Awesome and it's great you got to capture the moment.

My 7 year old is itching to dive with me. We got a few years to go.

I've been working with my 14 year old niece on not skulling with her hands. Not sure how to get her to stop it. Anyone have any tips? Maybe it will stop with more experience.

Re: My 12 Year Old's First Hogfish

I remember making those memories with my dad. Nothing better. We just got back in from a day of diving. Did a few drops with my dad, did a few with my brother a few with my wife and snorkeled with my 7 year old daughter. This is what it’s all about

It is actually quite easy, put something in her hands. I know it sounds like a joke, but a light, a pole spear etc. will greatly reduce the skulling.

Elimination of the ability to easily skull, will also help induce the diver to fine tune buoyancy, trim and attitude in the water, so it is a positive feedback loop. They will quickly eliminate the need for it, stop relying on it, and thus eliminate or reduce tendency to revert to it.

If you don't have the option of putting something in their hands, I used to make the kids swim with their palms pressed flatly onto their thighs (as much as possible). This reduces the tendency to clutch (and screw with) the inflator unnecessarily and the reduced body activity reduces air consumption and enhances their calmness.

It is perfectly natural for people to "Swim" with their hands, so it often takes some effort to modify that behavior. I used to emphasize the fact that it scares the little fish when you waive your hands, so if you want to see the cool little fish you have to be as still as possible. Providing the child a real reason and clear benefit from their perspective also helps self awareness.

You also got to consider that most of their peers are at home playing video games, so participating in a "real" activity with actual consequences is hugely beneficial, even if it takes quite a few iterations to get them where you want.

Good advice. I actually brought a camera for her on our last dive, but decided to not let her carry it because I didn't want her getting task loaded. Next time I'll give her a pole spear and see if that helps. Makes sense that it would. Thanks.
