Those planning on coming had better lower their expectations.
While the county is opening for tourisim, we are limpimg along as far as recovery. Many resturants have limited menus, are cash only due to no ability to process credit cards (Comcast Cable not working). There are many resturants still not open due to damage. Roads in many places debris covered (removal taking place all day, closing lanes on highway). If you don't have confirmed reservations, you will have a problem finding a place to stay. Between 1st responders, displaced locals and workers who have come down to work there is a severe housing shortage.

Don't forget your tire plugs. You will most likely get a flat tire from all the garbage around.

Re: Florida Keys Optimistic About Hurricane Recovery, Set to Reopen October 1st

If you are pondering coming down to the Keys or going elsewhere I'd like to suggest the Keys. I've got a small shop specializing in spearfishing gear and we need customers to survive. Yes, things will look a little different and finding accommodations may be more challenging post Irma but almost all of the restaurants in Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada have reopened. Most of the debris in our area has been picked up and hauled off. Recovery is in progress.

The charter business is hurting and revenues are down about 50% from last year. Good news for you is that there are a shit load of fish on the reefs and without all the pressure they are STUPID and curious. Last time I was out I saw 4 legal blacks and had 5 Muttons were 20 inches or larger that I stalked, and I was only out for about an hour and we did one drift. As it was we took one mutton, two big mangroves and a red grouper. I did a total of 8 drops that evening between 28 and 55 feet. The fish are everywhere.

Oh, you can leave your tire plugs at home too...I haven't had a flat yet, post Irma and I've been in some really shitty spots.

Please come on down and spend some money at our businesses...we need you.

Comcast still doesn't work and they applied for FEMA money !
why does a nasdaq stock exchange corporation apply for FEMA ? greed .
lower keys have 5 ft vis due to water releases from mainland .
our dive shop is also hanging on by a thread .but will survive .
looking forward to a better winter .
