Re: Bahamas (marsh harbour)

Get a copy of Steve Dodge abaco cruising guide.
Some sanctuary areas of no spearing.
Bring a good heavy duty pole spear, no guns allowed.
North of Green Turtle is virgin territory.

Re: Bahamas (marsh harbour)

Hi Gaudi,

We cruised the area from Green Turtle going northwards up to Walkers, in April/May of this year. Spent several weeks at it.
Was there the year before as well.
On a large sailing Cat and used a 25ft panga as a tender.

It is true that north of Green Turtle is better, but it is not exactly virgin territory. Quite a few local commercial spearos.

Most of the good reefs are on the eastern side of the Islands. I suspect there are some sweet spots on the west side of Green Turtle (in the channel) but we were too intent on getting out in the blue to find any inside spots.

Green Turtle was actually pretty barren of subsistence fish for the yacht , but the coral heads on the windward side of the islands are well worth exploring.
Just be careful as some of the Bommies come above/on the surface and with the wrong conditions (eg overcast sky and smooth surface) are difficult to spot and if they are just below the surface, can be out of sight and out of mind.
A clear sky with a bit of a ripple on the surface is best for exploring as you can spot the bommies easily, even at high speed.

If you spend enough time in the water, in the Green Turtle area, you should spot the occasional large Hog etc. Local rule is to take 18" and over.

Its is a long run on a small boat to get up to the northern reefs (around Rosies etc), if you are based at Green Turtle.

Trust you have someone to dive with and someone to tender the hire boat? You getting a local guide to help you?

PM me if you want further info.

Regards,
Mike.
