Wilderness Systems A.T.A.K. 140 (ATAK)
saw the new 2015 Wilderness Systems ATAK 140 online. Watched a couple of the demo videos and it has me intrigued. Anyone have any experience with it?
http://www.wildernesssystems.com/kayaks/atak/atak-140 My goal here is to have a platform I can use for free diving/ spearfishing - then toss a couple fishing poles in it and go out in some tidal basins. From Delaware to the Keys in the ocean and gulf is where I will be fishing. plans for the vessel is to do a GPS/ Fishfinder/ Sidescan. VHS, lighting and maybe radar if my buddy sells me his system he is getting rid of for the right price. In the demo video, I saw lots of different accessories I have No clue what they are. Something long and tall on the back of the yak. Might be some sort of bottom spike for stability like on a fishing boat? The seat is pretty awesome too. Wonder if it is removable like the Hobie too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl1KmW0U-hg |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ztp6veGXCa0 This platform looks promising. Lots of tech put into this design from what I am reading and watching. I really have been wanting an all BLACK kayak to match the theme of all my gear. Dusk and came look ok though. Would match my wetsuits. No one near me has one in stock. All of them are back ordered and people are pre ordering them. I can't sit on one anywhere or try loading my gear in one to see if it is the right one for me

I have a Future Beach angler 160 DLX that is pretty much the same specs and will do the same stuff for $400 Canadian!
Our Costco sells them. Compare them if cost is an issue.

It's not in the Costco website, but in the US apparently Dick's sporting goods sells them.
Lots of reviews / pics if you google: "future beach angler 160" It's slow, stable and hauls a TON of gear.

Re: Wilderness Systems A.T.A.K. 140 (ATAK)
The ATAK is a fantastic kayak and a result of input from mainly fishermen over the last several years. And while I agree that you can fish or dive from pretty much anything you want to, it is a far different kayak than something like the Future Beach. Of course it costs a lot more as well.
The ATAK is very fast for being a big stable kayak. You don't normally get both. The gunnels were also designed lower so wind would have less impact. Should make it easier to climb back in as well. As are most new kayaks, they are also built with the idea of being flexible from a rigging standpoint. Lots of tracks to mount gear to. And yeah, I think the long pole you were seeing is a micro power pole. Recently they are showing a torqueedo that mounts in the removable pod. They should start being more available soon so if you you have a chance go paddle one and see what you think. Again, I dont think it is absolutely necessary to buy the biggest and best but in this case there is a lot of design and features. |

I bought a yak (not a wilderness) and rigged it all out with everything. Took it out twice here on east coast. Between wind and current it was more work tryn to get anywhere then it was worth. Sold it and got a inflatable with a moter.

I dont take mine offshore. I know a lot of guys who do but I'm kind of with you. That is a lot of work. I am primarily inshore fresh water fishing out of mine.

Understood and agree! I was prepared to spend $3k CDN on a Hobie Revolution then saw the future beach at Costco for 1/7 the price and took the gamble. In retrospect, I'm super glad I did. It's slow and also on the heavy side. But the in-hull storage is ridiculously huge and suitable for week-long camping trips, etc and I put a high-backed seat on mine and I can fit another diver on it (sitting back to back) for dive trips where we only have 1 kayak / roof rack, as OF COURSE WE need a safety diver. It's an easy paddle for a mile or two to reach the desired depth / dive spot. I've had 410+ lbs of diver + 25lb bottom weight + 30-40 lbs of other gear and it was about the limit I'd say. I also use a 6" piece of webbing through the side handles and use it as my float for line diving! Best $400 I ever spent. The ability to fit a second diver on board is limited with the nice new seats like the ATAK or the new hobies. Back-to-back is the only way. I still would love a fast hobie to get out really far, quickly for salmon trolling or just the ability to be hands free (texting, photography, eating, drinking a beer, etc.)

Absolutely agree. As with most things, kayaks are about figuring out what works for your specific situation and comparing that the budget you want to spend. My current kayak is a $400 model as well but may end up with an ATAK too. The difference between diving and fishing is, I spend a lot of time in the kayak and specifically in the seat. Divers spend the time in the water. |
