Re: Bitch Fest

Why does flushing style of hunting make horses impractical?

Because it's alot more interactive style of hunting.

For example, I can see a pointer lock-up on birds from a hundred yards or better. At that point, I can ride up, dismount and make the flush.

However, with flushing breeds; you have a dog cutting back and forth (called quartering) directly in front of you ( no more than 30 yards out, I prefer a bit closer) until they enter a birds scent cone. Once that happens, they immediately become 'birdy' and a flush is almost immenent at that point. So, you'd have to really be quick on the dismount or have a bomb proof ride that doesn't mind you shooting off it's back. A practice I wouldn't advocate.

For the most part,I'll keep a spaniel or Lab at heel, until we enter an area that I believe is holding birds. At which point, if I am hunting with friends I set them as blockers; and then the dogs and I will enter the cover and flush out birds holding up in here.

That help ?

Re: Bitch Fest

Paints a clear picture. I didn't think about the difficulty of shooting mounted, seen too many westerns I guess.

Yeah, man, not a practice I'd recommend. Even my two mules ,Amos and Andy, were so bomb proof I could dismount, leave 'em on a ground lead, shoot, address the dog's retrieve, and remount at the very same place I left them.

But,I wouldn't think of shooting mounted from either one.

Re: Bitch Fest

Should be possible though, horses were commonly used in battle. Not sure about mules though.
