Re: shark Shield in the Middle Grounds
That’s an archaic term that’s best left behind - same as shell
Shock. We now use: PTSD pretty traumatic shocking dive

Re: shark Shield in the Middle Grounds
I got the boom too... It's the ones you don't see coming in crappy viz.
Should I ditch it. I don't know. The fin clip made a huge improvement. I'm sure I'd have a little bit different perspective if I didn't have two really small kids while diving skinny water. I view it as cheap insurance and the rise in coastal shark populations doesn't make things any better. I can't imagine you guys see many sharks in the deep stuff. All the more reason to continue working on my diving goals. |

Re: shark Shield in the Middle Grounds
As far as Shark Shields, my advice would be if it makes a diver more comfortable in the water, then it's a good thing. Every hunter will have to make a personal decision to wear one or not wear one. There are positives and negatives with either decision. At the end of the day, it's an individual choice.

Re: shark Shield in the Middle Grounds
I probably see more Sharks in the deeper stuff, usually small-medium size stuff but when a big one makes an appearance, it's usually a really big one. The one thing you don't see is packs of Bulls.......

Quote:
I've never seen them so bad down here in the keys this May. In one area there was a pack 8-12 full sized bulls on almost every spot that was loaded with fish. After shooting fish around them for awhile they started to get more aggressive and one day I shot a 40 pound black and got in the middle of a feeding frenzy and was table topped by two bulls while I watched the others scrap for every last piece. Don't think a shark shield could do anything about that. Shit the BOOM didn't even work.

Re: shark Shield in the Middle Grounds
Nope. The only thing you can do is to leave. And like you said, when you're in an area they're thick in, every "A" spot will have them. I've run 20 miles to put them in my rearview.....

Re: shark Shield in the Middle Grounds
Here in Jupiter we have tons of shark diving "feeding" boats and it has definitely transformed the behavior of the sharks as they come swimming up to the boat when you pull up and you are often rolling over the side with sharks already excited for their anticipated free meal.
One of my worst dives was May 1st of 2018 (grouper opener here). The seas had been pretty rough and none of the shark boats had been out for a week or so. The poor little sharks were starving as their owners had not been around to feed them. On this dive I mistakenly thought I was far enough away from the regular shark feeding areas but I was wrong. They showed up in full force after a few minutes. https://youtu.be/9cJsCSwCU0c After this experience, i increased the number of PPDs I carry and I started using a shark shield. Hey Cuzza, I am definitely going to use your fin clip idea. That looks perfect.
