Old Diver Callout for King of the Surf Guitar
...Back when I was a younger man, eager to hit the King's Highway (PCH) to be off on another free diving adventure, with my speargun sticking out the sunroof and a hot chick next to me; there was always one type of music blaring on the radio as I drove off in my old VW Bug.
...The music was a loud, highly amplified wailing sound guaranteed to get your adventurous soul lit up. It was Dick Dale and the Del Tones.. He did not merely play an electric guitar, he beat it to death. He drove Leo Fender crazy, constantly blowing up Fender amplifiers until finally, Leo was able to design electronics capable of matching Dick's style of playing. ...Dick Dale, the legend, has passed on, but, on Sunday, May 26th, there is an event not be missed by his old school fans. At 9 a.m., there will be a memorial, followed by surfers paddling out at 10 a.m., with a surf music concert from 11 to 5:30 p.m. Along with tribute surf bands, the free concert will include members of the original Del Tones, reuniting for probably the last time. ...On Sunday, like days of old, I will once again head down the King's Highway, off on another adventure....This time, to pay tribute to the King of California Dreaming...Just look for the old guy with the blue Navy baseball cap, rickety knees jumping in time with the music, with his hot chick next to him... ...Location: Huntington Beach pier at the foot of Main Street...This is the opening event for the summer Surfing Sundays music series at the pier. A schedule is available at the Chamber shack next to Dukes restaurant.....(It's back to diving info once all the nasty weather blows by).... Last edited by Bob Ballew; 05-24-2019 at 10:15 PM. |

Re: Old Diver Callout for King of the Surf Guitar
Well, despite the bad weather, it was a lot of fun. Along with stories, the Del Tones played their hits just as well today, as in years past. The rain held off for the most part and a large crowd was there. Even had 5 go-go girls in mini-skirts and white boots, jiggling away...although they were almost my age, they made up for missing youth with lots of enthusiasm.... my hot chick was home with the flu, but, made sure to do the usual inquisition as to exactly how much "interaction" I had with the go-go girls...Youngsters, when tempted, always remember; "Hell hath no fury, like a jealous woman".....
