Sawfish at Bathtub

Had a decent day of diving today minus the murk. Could only see 10' in most spots and maybe 15 at best in others. Got a couple nice snappers and about a 6lb Margate. Saw a few grouper but I wasn't completely sure they were legal so I didn't shoot. On the way in we saw two nurse sharks that were about 8' long laying together out at the third reef. We were almost to the second reef when I heard my buddy call me so I swam over to see a Sawfish laying on the bottom. It was about 9' long and was a very impressive animal to see. Never thought I would see one at Bathtub.

Re: Sawfish at Bathtub

Saw one on river monsters, not sure if its the same fish. Looks like a shark with a baseball/nails sticking out as a nose. I'd be more threatened of that fish than a shark, maybe not a big one but still a cool thing to see. I guess you could call it a fish of a lifetime ha

Awesome! I believe that I read somewhere that FWC would like for you to report on sightings of sawfish, but I cant seem to find the paperwork on it now. Might be beneficial to look into it

Re: Sawfish at Bathtub

Thats awesome bro! Ive been diving bathtub for 16 yrs solid and never had that kind of lucky sighting! The funny thing is thatyou can see such a diverse array of life at anny given time...i will never forget a few yrs back i was diving of the tip between surfer beach and bthtub in about 12 ft of water, and i saw this giant mass just out of view... So as i swim towards it i realize that the behemoth that was before me was a giant sunfish! I shit you not from top to bottom fin this thing was easily 7' around and big googley eyes! Haha it was the first and only time i have witnessed one, but an experience that i def wont forget! Anyways man congrads on your sighting and hopefully we all get the chance to see one in person at least once before they are all gone....

Re: Sawfish at Bathtub

That's even crazier than a sawfish. I had to google it to even know what that was. That thing doesn't even look real. But yeah it's unfortunate that overfishing has dwindled their numbers down so low. It's amazing the things that are right out there in the water that without being in the right place at the right time you would never even know was there. Ten more feet to the left and we would have never seen it.

Congrats, thats a rare sighting. They are such a cool sight underwater. Just knowing that they could shred you at will is intimidating and awe-inspiring at the same time. I spent some time with one up in Jupiter and it ranks as one of the coolest dives ever, even though I did't shoot anything.

Yes , email the Florida Museum www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/sawfish
they will be very happy to hear about this. We have sighted 2 in the Bahamas and reported both and sent photos. The last one was in Dean's Blue Hole-very unusual.
The bad thing was ;we were in a restaurant talking about it and showing the photos and some idiots were bragging about having speared one. Just the kind of thing that gives spearfishing a bad name- killing a severely endangered and inedible species. They kill them to display the saw.

That's when I would drop a dime. I have NO tolerance for 99% of poachers out there, and none when its an endangered species. (to be clear, I did run into an individual who didn't do it for money or ego, but to put food on his kids plate).

Re: Sawfish at Bathtub

Bathtub was as clear as I had ever seen it on Saturday, but Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday were a bit more murky. Definitely still huntable though. I usually bring my camera out with me to get some video footage but yesterday I decided to leave it at home for whatever reason and of course that's when I see something worth capturing. I can't believe someone would shoot such a thing, but then again there's a lot of idiots out there who deserve a spear to the face as well. Maybe I'll get lucky and see it again and will be able to get some footage of it.
