Learning to Catch Lobsters with a Looper
A recent video of local lobster diving.
I was trying to use a looper, but was having terrible luck until my buddy explained that the loop has to be bent down and hang down. Probably obvious to anyone who uses them, but I have not tried one for many years. https://youtu.be/TBlCNBV5EbA

Re: Learning to Catch Lobsters with a Looper
I am a netter myself. I seem to catch 50% females and feel that the snares do more harm to the lobsters.

Cool video. Great viz and dang that is a ton of bugs! I like that smaller net...seems to be better then those wide ones that are in every store. Fly fishing net?

What kind of net (frame) is that? Where did you get it?

Re: Learning to Catch Lobsters with a Looper
All home made I think. Not sure, but I think the frame may be the wire from hubcaps that get ripped off at a railroad track near my house, think I doubled them up

Re: Learning to Catch Lobsters with a Looper
I have only seen one lobster in my whole life, and I didn't even touch it (forbidden where I fish). I cannot imagine having SO MANY right in front of me and being legal to catch! Do you have a minimum size and maximum catch (weight/units)?

Re: Learning to Catch Lobsters with a Looper
Minimum size is a 3 inch carapace(section of body between the eyes back to where the tail starts). No maximum size. we can keep 6 per day per diver. For two days of the year (mini season in July) we get to keep 12 per diver each day. Season is closed April through the first week of August with the exception of the two day mini season.

Re: Learning to Catch Lobsters with a Looper
Another little trick for using the snare is that if they’re backed into a tight hole (like at 11:30) you can close the loop the open it after you’ve pushed it past them.

Re: Learning to Catch Lobsters with a Looper
Nice video. I haven't had much luck with the snare either, but looks like you were doing well enough with the net!
