Re: Speargun Safety
I use the safety every time, buddy or no buddy, this way the habit is ingrained.
1. On the surface safety is on while waiting for a submerged diver or during my breath up. 2. I switch the safety off right before I pack air, clear my nose and descend. 3. Finger is never on the trigger till I want to shoot. 4. Safety goes back on during ascent. Gun is never pointed at anything you would not want shot. |

Re: Speargun Safety
I have two guns, one has a safety, one doesn't.
When I use the gun with the safety, I use it on the surface, between dives. |

Re: Speargun Safety
I filed the safety switches down on my rabitechs, I like them on for transportation, so I dont accidentally release the spear and line from the gun while packing a speargun awkwardly into the car etc.
But the second I get my rubbers loaded in the water, the safety is off untill I am unloaded and back in the boat or on shore. There has been a number of times where I have jumped in the water and left the safety on, and lost a fish because I couldnt fire, or even spooked fish by the click of the safety. So, muzzle control, unloading rubbers before exiting the water, and common sense for the win, like most people have said in this thread. You're more likely to shoot a buddy by accident by not paying attention to what is behind your target - possibly not even visible. |

Re: Speargun Safety
I never use a safety and I remove them off all of my guns.
Follow the 3 basic rules of all firearms 1) Keep it pointed in a safe direction 2) Treat it as if it is always loaded 3) Never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot Dont put a loaded speargun on a boat... unload it before trying to exit the water especially when shore diving... unload it in 10 ft of water then swim in... dont go though the surf with a loaded speargun... Relying on a safety is the best way to get someone shot... just be smart and use (Not so)common sense... |

Re: Speargun Safety
I don't have a safety... There for I treat my Koah as I would my Glock. Finger off the trigger till the target is met.

Re: Speargun Safety
I have three guns and use the safety on all of them. Never point it at anything I'm not going to shoot and finger off the trigger till I do.

Re: Speargun Safety
I chose "It depends on my instincts" because I normally will spear when my family takes the boat out, and I'm usually the only one with a gun. I use a basic JBL 38 special (Great gun for beginners getting into the sport). Still have yet to have a misfire (Knock on wood)!
I feel like even with the safety on, the only true safety is undoing the bands and basic knowledge of projectile weapons. |

Training following same pattern/building muscle memory, responsible muzzle control. I like your use of "ingrained". Everyone should strive for that. Not just for a safety, even simple use and control of the speargun whether it be rigging, loading, untangling etc. Intimate knowledge of the gear you use will make you a safer and more efficient spearo. All that being said: Quote:
Buuuut..I think it's worth noting, As long as one follows the exact same safety practices whether using or not using a mechanical safety, I can't really trash talk anyone who does decide to use their safety on a speargun because the stakes are so different than those of an actual firearm(where I will strongly object to the use of a safety). |

Re: Speargun Safety
Safety on a speargun is laughable at best. YOU are the safety and it is called "spear tip awareness and common sense". Thinking that a safety on trigger mech is safe is extremely unsafe.

Re: Speargun Safety
Surprised to see so many divers against using a safety button. I've owned guns and spearguns my entire life and I'll tell you right now, if anyone ever says "I don't need a safety because I never make mistakes" I'd damn sure never dive with them. That's a lesson nobody wants to learn the hard way.
