Does epoxy hold silicon? (for gun butt pad)
Dear team,
I found industrial silicon mat which they place under heavy machinery. I wanted to ask if it works for gun butt pads? Does it glue well to wood using epoxy? Regards Jamil |

Short answer; no.
As a rule, only silicone will stick to silicone but it’s hard to find a good silicone adhesive. If the mat is actually PU or rubber and not silicone then yes, you can use an epoxy or PU adhesive. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If you’re a gun builder you’ll have epoxy around and perhaps you can cut a small sample of the silicone in question and make a test to verify for yourself...? I spoke in general terms about and I kinda expect to be correct (on this particular matter) but if I was in your shoes I would do a test:-) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It looks like it might be thick enough to countersink some pan-head screws, maybe even with washers to mechanically hold it in place?

Just test it on a scrap piece of wood or, try it on ur gun, if it comes off, sand the epoxy down et glue something else..

Silicone rubber is often used for molds of cold curing materials as things don't stick to it. Roughening the surface you might get a bond with a contact adhesive keying into it, but I think screws are your best bet. If you cup the rear of your gun butt then you can put a screw in the center and one on each side to stop the butt pad moving around, thus creating a dished surface. Think of the butt pad on the Riffe Metaltech.

Re: Does epoxy hold silicon? (for gun butt pad)
I like the idea of cupping the rear pete. only challenge here is the rear on our wooden guns have small diameter rear. Cutting/carving a cup into it will result in thin wooden frame to hold the silicon which can break or crack easily. any thoughts here?
We currently use hard rubber which bonds great, but is too hard and can hurt if you don't have a chest loading pad on your suite. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2Og9h7F8cc/ what kind of glue gives a good decent bond between silicon and wood. I can always use the screw to hold the pad well in place. Regards, Jamil |

You could add triangular shapes to widen the butt, although not as large as on this one which was made years ago. Then you put a slight curve in the rear.

Re: Does epoxy hold silicon? (for gun butt pad)
Dow Corning produces a full line of structural glazing sealants and would be the only manufacturer that could be recommended with a higher probability of success.
Dow 995, or Dow 795. These are one-part medium modules, neutral-curing silicone sealants. You cannot find them at a typical home store, and will need to locate a contractor supply house, or distributor. Expect to pay about $5-7 per tube, which is an excellent price when compared to the typical acid cure silicones available at most home stores that can be as much as $8-10 per tube. If it smells like vinegar, its an acid cure sealant and they are not even in the same ball park, let alone the same sport when it comes to performance properties of a good silicone like Dow. For it to perform as intended, you need the silicone sealant joint between the wood and silicone pad to be at least 1/8"-1/4" thick. You will need to wait 2 weeks for it to achieve maximum adhesion. However with that in mind, why not just take some polyethylene tape and wrap the end of the gun butt with the tape extending proud of the butt about 1/2" to 3/4" and fill it up with silicone sealant and let it cure. It will bond to the wood, and form a monolithic silicone loading pad. |
