Does Scuba diving really make a difference while spearfishing?

Everyone makes such a big deal about how scuba diving "scares" the fish away and isn't the best for spearfishing, is this true?
Thanks

No. Only certain pelagics are afraid of the bubbles. And sharks a little.

I think it does pelagic or not pelagic, I've had fish start runnin from 30ft to 5ft away from me having to exhale, its somethin you gotta log some scuba dives in to understand

Re: Does Scuba diving really make a difference while spearfishing?

I think the fish learn. I've free dived in areas here where the only thing I would see on snappers was their tail as they swam off and ducked into a hole.
I then put on scuba gear and was diving the exact spot on the reef with my wife and they snappers would come within 1 foot of my mask.
If you start shooting fish on scuba, they'll learn the bubbles mean danger.

I've rarely if ever seen a Permit, African Pompano, Kingfish, Tuna, or Wahoo diving tanks.

But I had them all swim pretty close to me or right up to me while freediving. Then again I have a special fish call when I'm equalizing.

All points above are true.. Once fish have seen a scuba diver a few times and recognizes it as danger, it will run and hide.
The advantages and disadvantages of both are something you almost have to see for yourself.

I will tell you though, there is a good reason that hunting on a rebreather is not allowed. I have seen people on rebreathers approach grouper and goes face to face with them as those same fish would have run before I got within 30 feet of them.

I know there are those freedivers that think it is cheating.. Until you try it, you really don't see it..

Scuba
- You can stay down longer and hunt fish in holes
- Can go deeper
- Fish spook and run when exhaling (lower east coast)

Free diving
- Can usually approach fish without spooking (if you know what you are doing)
- Bottom time limited
