Trip Report 1/25 - AJs and 66 degrees
January Trip Report – Feeding time & AJs
AMBERJACK. We headed out early in the AM, seas were supposed to be 1-2 and ended up being 3-4 with a 5 mixed in. The Stamas handeled the waves to perfection and we were seeing bottom by 9. Water temp was a whopping 66 degrees at the bottom but the thought of a nice hogfish (and a 5mm wetsuit) veto’d the cold. After the first dive we headed out farther too find other ledges. We already had some nice GREY SNAPPER along with enough hogfish for dinner; Now this is where things get interesting. 2nd dive was a deeper ledge and we dropped in and I immediately shot another mang. As Im controlling the fish I see a 6 foot lemon shark skirting away from a speargun shot. I caught up to my dive buddy and he had a nice 21′ mang… up the the surface on the liftbag they went. We resurfaced to be dropped at the original drop. Headed back along the ledge and ran into some AJs which can be seen in the link below or at http://www.facebook.com/naplesspearfishingleague. As my AJ is trying to get back over the gunnels John surfaces with a monster AJ that he stoned, nice shot John. After landing Johns AJ we noticed it had be bit by the lemon shark which can be seen in the photos. Third dive we had great viz, blue water upwards to 40 feet, which is as good as it gets! We had dubbed this spot “feeding time” because we usually hit it at the end of the trip before dusk..and you know we have sharks on our minds! After diving for a bit a young bullshark cruised in to check us out making the shark sighting total 3. I never want to see them on a dive, but after I do its always humbling, they are graceful and smart creatures. They might try to steal your fish like a street thug though! We headed back with some nice meat in the cooler and were able to catch a greenflash sunset and watch a fiery moonrise. Aside from the AJs and sharks we also saw a 8 foot Stingray, Huge Goliath Grouper (400+lbs) and more sharks checking us out. Stay tuned for videos and more pictures of all that. I dove Steinhatchee last week it was a nice 62 on top 54 on the bottom of 62 foot. Should have brought a lil more than a 3 mm. Quick limit of big hogs, 2 fat sheepies and PHed 2 AJs 20 min BT came up a little cold to say the least
