Re: Fish Species Indonesia-Nov

Careful of current at Ulu especially on the outside. There are fads to dive up in north Bali as well.

Never did see any charts and each fish seems to have a different name on different island but these fish names are pretty standard throughout.

The ding repair guys will often trade fish for ding repair.

Ikan Kokatau: Parrot fish
Ikan Kakap Merah: Red Snapper
Ikan Tongkol: Mackerel Tuna
Ikan Tuna Sirip Kuning: Yellowfin Tuna
Ikan Tuna Sirip Biru: Bluefin Tuna
Ikan Tenggiri: Spanish Mackerel
Ikan Lemadang: Dolphinfish/Mahi-Mahi
Ikan Barakuda/Barakuta: Barracuda
Ikan Kerapu: Grouper

Are the bold species the most common for that time of year?

Re: Fish Species Indonesia-Nov

Go to the Delpi Warung, ask Ketut Pitur if he still has a Fish Identification Chart. Say hello from Jon. Go by Drifter Surf Shop and ask for Jake ask him if he's going diving. From the Local Boy crew down there ask for Chokz, say hello from Jon, he could point you in some directions. On the reef look for Mu, Trevally, Red Bass (Non Ciguatoxic in Uluwatu), Mangrove Jack, Flower Cod (Grouper). As Pak Ross has said. You need to be carfeul of the currents on the Outer Reef. These days you also need to be very careful not to get run over by a boat. Seriously. It all depends on the currents, but if you swim out a mile or more and it's on.. you could run into King Mackeral, Wahoo, Black Marlin (Do not shoot.) etc.. In October you have a Spinner Shark Migration, so don't carry any fish around the "Secrets" zone or else you could find yourself in a bad situation as it's not deep and there could be literally 100 sharks around you. If you go out far, expect currents. Use the Minimal set up so you don't have a lot of crap. A Carter Float is great. Don't drag around a Bungee, or a lot of rope. Use a Reel. If you go off the reef you want to be able to swim Freestyle to fight the currents. I used to bring a length of thin rope, a Carter float, both of which went into the pocket in the back of my rashguard/suit. If diving the reef I bring a reef anchor. If going out far no anchor neccesary. I use a Gun flasher which is a Yozuri Rattler on a 6-8' length of 50lb mono. I can tuck that lure into my weight belt and my gun will trail behind my fins so I can freestyle swim. Usually I only catch one fish since that's all I need. Then come back in.

Be careful of the Leatherjackets. They have a terrible knife on the tail and will cut you very very deep and you will need a lot of stitches. Don't stick your arms in holes looking for Lobster. The Lobster population is decimated and there are Basketball sized Morays which could grab you.

Really I just hunt for Mu, Yellow Lipped Emporer inside.. only take what you want to eat.

Where you staying?

Uh, yeah, what Pak Jon said. He knows that reef better than anyone.

I dragged a float (with whistle) around with me for safety and to string fish but the line attached to your gun definitely makes fish more weary. The Carter float system sounds pretty ideal.

I know a French guy who lived on Nusa Penita and he swears he has shot Bluefin Tuna there but I think he was quite prone to hyperbole. I certainly never saw BFT there but my buddy who does research in East Indo sent me a list of Indonesian fish names. The list was longer but I trimmed it down to fish you might encounter or want to eat. There are some monster Big Eye tuna there that my friend targets as well. maybe Jon can chime in on BFT there.

Not sure about Bluefin but I have seen some Fat Yellowfin offshore. If you see any of these, pull the trigger.
