Dove Leo by malibu Tar all over me and equipment 5/4
Just heads up dove Leo by Malibu last Thur 5/4 looking for wsb. I must of swam right through a slick of oil or something not realizing it. I started smelling it then noticed hanging off the tip of my spear. Couldn't deal with the smell got out in 10 min. It's on my wetsuit, fins, mask, spots all over my Andre. I was so frustrated. I used Gasoline to get most off but wetsuit I didn't try. Character lol.

W0W! Bummer!
I have NO IDEA how to clean that off your wetsuit. Your suit is " most likely" Lycra or Nylon on the outside, and I don't know what would cut a petroleum product and not do damage to those fabrics... But IF you figure it out... PLEASE SHARE ( not that I EVER envision Myself in this predicament!) |

...Try soaking it in Oxyclean (powder) detergent and water mix for 20 minutes, then scrub with a brush and wipe with rags.. Don't leave it too long, as that stuff can take the chrome off a scuba regulator...
...I soak the blood out of clothing with it after a tuna trip. Works pretty well... ...For removing tar, glue, rubber streaks, etc; on hard surfaces and my hands, I use Acetone on a rag. But, it may eat into a wetsuit, so, try it on a small hidden area first and always wash your hands immediately with soapy water. It is a known cancer carcinogen... ...After giving more thought to your problem, I suggest the following: rubber dishwashing gloves or throwaway plastic food prep gloves (Smart & Final), qt. of Acetone (Lowes), lots of rags, garden hose ready to spray...
...Wipe fast and change rags frequently..if it starts to damage the wetsuit, rinse the area and move to another spot, repeating the sequence..let suit dry and repeat again over the following days, if needed. ...Finish with the Oxyclean bath to remove in-cell residue and neutralize smell... ...NOTE: Many chemicals generate heat and will ignite combustable materials in a compressed pile. Let the rags dry out before disposal in a trash can. Acetone evaporates in a few hours. Good luck |

baby oil - clear mineral oil.. works great to dissolve tar and a lot better on your skin then acetone! I assume a little baby oild won't ruin the suit, but I bet it will leave a stain. Sun tan oil if they still make that stuff works too.

I hear that Dawn “Blue” works on everything. That’s whats used to clean off the birds soaked in oil with the spills

...Let us know the outcome...I think Dawn is ok for cleaning liquidfied oil but, if it is tar globs, you will probably need something stronger to dissolve the layers...

I used gasoline with a rag on my gun and fins. Came right off. I didn't use anything on my wetsuit just added character lol. The smell that day was making me sick. Thanks for the great advice

The WSB love tar and oil slicks. Even more than kelp. Just consider the place the WR was shot.

I dove south of Leo yesterday (Zeros) and got a nice WSB (18lbs) and my annual Summer lobster that I cooked at the campsite (We were camping at Leo). We actually brought NO protein with the idea that we MUST be successful with our harvesting. I got some uni as well, my buddy's mom got a ton of Pacific littleneck clams, a few kellet's welks and an octopus in the tidepools. We made fish tacos, linguini and clams, welk, grilled octopus with uni butter (also a broth made with the WSB head, carcass and scraps). We used an uni and lobster roe aoli for the tacos with some Tapatio added. No tar problems, and a few lbs of WSB fillets leftover for the freezer.
