Port Orford - Albacore Trips?
Steve Nichols of Nichols Guide and Charter Service came into my work today. He has a guide boat that holds 4-5 people and is based out of Port Orford. Albacore trips and reef trips are part of his normal fishing routine. I asked if he would take a full boat out for Albacore (fishing and spearing) and he said he would love to do that. He would need to be trained as to what to do with regards to divers. I wanted to share his contact info so that somebody far more experienced than myself could provide due diligence and see if this could be something we could get happening this summer. Here is the info:

Re: Port Orford - Albacore Trips?
William, I'd advise no more than 3 divers in the water at a time for albies. You could have more on board but not in water at same time. too many floatline tangles, need to get in/out of water fast and move, quick. 2 at a time is more ideal, so you can trail floatlines before you approach a boil, cut throttles/neutral, coast, bail out and dive in seconds. A new to divers helmsman you also don't want many in the water. 2 to begin with till confidence builds. Example, approach divers to be picked up from the 'high side' ie upwind sail effect will carry boat toward divers while in neutral.

Re: Port Orford - Albacore Trips?
how deep can you dive? If you can dive deeper, i'd rock a 75' including bungee. Often they are shallow around bait balls so even a 40' plus 10' bungee could work, but sometimes deeper can get you in range. Be sure to have a min 10' bungee added on to absorb 1st hard runs.
but more to the point is how long (range) is your gun? You need something with very high shaft velocity and honest 20' range to hit these fast fish. The best speargun in the world for tuna currently as tested by majdq8 (see youtube) is the 2017 Abellan Albacore 130 model, which at 3 bands, outperforms every 4-6 band gun ever tested on accuracy and punch at 7 meters +. |

Re: Port Orford - Albacore Trips?
Was planning on a 50' line and will add a bungee now that you mentioned it, my gun is a 120 built to same dimensions as the Denton it shoots great for a 120, and I don't want to drop the $$$ for an Albacore.
