Anyone using ipad as gps/plotter?

Seems like a viable alternative

$630 ipad

$50 inavx software

$150 for a waterproof case and mount

gets you a 10" display that should be fine for storing and navigating to waypoints and can be removed and used as a tablet off the boat.

I have the navionics app for my iPhone and it works great ! I paid $15 for the app on the iPhone but my buddy has it on the Ipad and he loves it. It gets you where you need to go and tells you tides and all that good stuff. I would recommend it

Hi Chung. I have the Navionics on both phone and iPad but never really thought of using it as my primary. Will try it next trip out and give you feedback. Have you tried it, thoughts? Peter

Re: Anyone using ipad as gps/plotter?

I don't have an iPad but I do also have the Navionics app on my iphone. From my reading online, iNavx - http://www.inavx.com/ - is the current state of the art in iPad navigation.

But most of the reviews and videos of people using the iPad are for cruising and boating tasks such as navigating and planning trips etc., static stuff that can be done at home on the couch. I just want to know how it handles dynamics like marking a waypoint for a ledge the instant it shows up on the bottom machine, and how quick and responsive the screen redraws are.

In other words, it sounds like a great setup for navigating and cruising, but how good is it for the stuff we do - instantly marking waypoints?

Re: Anyone using ipad as gps/plotter?

You will need the newer generation ipad that has gps imbedded in it, otherwise, you will be confined to cell tower coverage. I'm int he process of manually converting my #'s over from list and the three Garmin 76's I own. Ebay has a mount that is comaptible with the Griffin survivor case I have. I plan on using it with a 76 as backup in the near future.

I did take it inshore on my whaler for a 20 mile trip, it (inavx) loads and moves faster than the Garmins and it allows for a whole range of imputs from the engine and environment. Now I'm trying to figure out how to hook it up to a transducer.

Hey Chiung
I have two friends that have the new Ipad with navionics and they love it. Nice big screen and faster plotter than on the boat. They use it as a back-up. Plus you can lock your I-pad for security reasons !!

I use MemoryMap and Navionics on my iPad with a Dual Gps. I keep the iPad in an otterbox to protect it. The thing works great and the total cost was $27 for Memorymap and $99 for the Bluetooth dual gps. To have this on a 10 inch touch screen you would have to pay between $2000-3000. I also have Navionics. The graphics are better but not as user friendly.

Me and my whole spearfishing crowd all use Navionics on ...well...everything we own....iPad, iPhone, Android phones, Android tablets... you name it. We all love it and use it for everything from local spearing to long-range trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Re: Anyone using ipad as gps/plotter?

I think one of the most important factors is how fast it will update your position from the GPS. Using my iphone and a free GPS version and I really could tell that it always jumped back and forth due to not updating very often. I`m not sure what the rate is, but GPSs like garmin update the position multiple times per second, the phone on the other hand only maybe like once per second or so. So I guess if navionics makes your ipad update your position more often (A LOT more often) then it`ll be fine.

Re: Anyone using ipad as gps/plotter?

The GPS tracking within the Navionics app is dependent on your device that you're using. I have it on my Android phone and the tracking isn't as good as on my iPad. However, the tracking within Google maps and my running-tracking app is also slower on my Android phone than on my iPad. It's completely the device GPS, not the app. Just something to think about when you're considering what device to get/use. I use Navionics on all my devices but my favorite is the iPad b/c the internal GPS is better and it has a bigger screen. The app is just as good on both devices.

your problem is going to be glare, and unless you get it at the right angle the screen looks black with polarized glasses

Exactly.... I've tried it on my boat several times and even with the top on my boat it was worthless at any angle. Unless you only fish at night don't bother.

Re: Anyone using ipad as gps/plotter?

We used the Navionics app on our Android tablet and phones throughout the Caribbean and Bahamas both on our sailboat (bimini top) and on our dinghy (no bimini top). We never had a problem with glare at all. I think it will depend on the device.
