General question - depths lower keys

Hi,

I will be down in Cudjoe for a week in late august. If I want to target large yellowtail and black grouper, would I need to hit the outer reef? Would you recommend diving closer to the drop off or the side of the outer reef closer to the patch reefs? I am guessing target depth around here is 50-70? Assume that I have never dove this reef before. Also assume that I am not experienced in diving with curious/aggressive sharks in the area, so if you have any caution on that I would love to hear. Thank you!

As the water heats up the grouper tend to move deeper and deeper. If you are freediving you will find them on the outer reef...40-90 feet. If you are going scuba then I would suggest looking in 70 feet and deeper. There are usually decent hogs (18-25") and muttons in the sand 50 feet off the reef (on the bottom) in 100-110 feet. Yellowtail also follow the same rule, pretty much, the deeper you go the bigger they are but they are usually schooled up nicely in August. Hit multiple spots as I find that Yellowtail tend to hang with the same sized fish. We usually chum them up and dive the slick...bigger fish are usually further back in the slick. Don't use menhaden oil chum cause that shit never comes out of your rashguard and will make your wetsuit smell horrible.

Good luck.
