Sharks used to respect divers and keep their distance, it's not like that anymore.

Re: Who is Afraid of Bull Sharks?

I have a sharkshield but rarely wear it as it doesn't work good enough when you need it the most and is annoying. I only use lift bags, but I lost two lift bags + stringers in three years to bulls following it up and beating the boat.

I've noticed bulls following me and then come in close whenever I posture up and begin stalking a fish. I withdraw my stalk and they instantly back away. I've had the bulls swim in between me and target fish before I shoot! I've been charged multiple times when I'm not wearing the stringer.

I charge first when I can, but it isn't working anymore. The only thing that works is diving with a buddy to watch your back. This is from all around Jupiter, and my experiences elsewhere don't come close.

I've been gang-banged Sea Archer style by multiple Bulls on the last 3 grouper I've shot all eaten in front of my face after the shot before I can pull in the line or swim it down.

Now I won't spearfish solo around here, just lobster. I take the gun if I have a buddy.

Yeah, what the shark feeders up here in Jupiter. Their actions have definitely made the sharks much more aggressive.

Admittedly I have no experience diving Jupiter, But I see what you are saying. I have used a lift bag for fish in the past, on deep deco dives. But this makes me think of when I used to spear in St Croix, back in the early to mid 80's.
Diving was in Cane Bay, from shore, no boat no float, on the 12,000' wall. We'd bag our fish (canvas bag, like a laundry bag) Yea, on occasion a shark would grab and shake the bag, but rarely. Some guys would gut the fish then bag it, and that worked also, except now the sharks followed you around.
Ya do what ya gotta do, when ya gotta do it.

Re: Who is Afraid of Bull Sharks?

Multiple Bulls are no joke. If you can leave, then leave and go elsewhere. Back diving the same spot with blood in the water should be avoided if at all possible. If you have to back dive then deploying two divers is the best option.

Re: Who is Afraid of Bull Sharks?

Agreed, never a good idea to back dive when sharks are sketchy except to retrieve worthwhile fish. We don't lift fish as tigers and sandbars will follow it right up.
There used to be more bulls locally, used to be.They are assholes always.

We don't have any more video of that aspect. I might put together a few clips of me shooting some small fish on that trip.

I've shot cobia from sharks while freediving. If you have a group of divers who work together and have a pretty well defined plan of action, we can get most of those cobia up. It seems to require multiple divers to run interference and provide back up and still, there are times when the sharks get too amped up and I will bail. I'm not so sure it is a sfmart thing to do anyway.
Lately the sharks in Jupiter and West Palm
are off the hook, ever since they stopped shark fishing.
It has gotten so bad that even some of my badass diver friends won’t spear around them.I have shot many cobia off the backs of Bulls with a good team around me, but no more.Way to many sharks come in now,it just not worth it.
I like keeping both of my hands,it’s the few seconds stringing the fish on the surface float that can be scary.
Better safe than sorry Jim, I have started caring a power head again.
