Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread
Good looking shorthair! I bought one of those vests for mine and had to have it "custom tailored" to fit him!

Jarom,
I use the tried and true 30-06. The rifle has been in my family since the 1930's and every man in my family has killed his first deer and elk with it from my grandpa on down to his two sons and now me. I'm trying to expand that trend on to bear, cougar, and every big game animal in North America. |

.30-06 is the way to go! love mine. i was reading a biography on hemingway and according to the author he took every animal in his life with a .30-06 except a rhino. dont know how credible that statement is, but it is a very diverse round.

I do know that Hemingway used an 06, but I also know he used some huge double rifle 5-something nitro I think.
I couldn't agree more about the round. My grandfather killed both a coastal brown bear and a Kodiak brown bear with this rifle right after the war, so I have no doubt it's capable of taking the largest game in this hemisphere. |

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread
My wife cut, hemed, and sewed his. Now it to fits just right. They are cut for labs, and shorthairs have a deeper chest with a narrow waist. The jacket is critical in the winter for a skinny dog without a double coat. He has a waterproof fleece vest that he wears under the neoprene for added protection. He wasn't bred to be a duck dog but he loves it!

You all are having way to much fun.
In between elk hunting [ archery ] and fish hunting, I do a little competition shooting. When someone brings a helo its even more fun. |

Wow Dean! Fantastic set of photos! You live the life of a true outdoorsman! Thanks for sharing those!
Casey - What a lovely old 30-06! I use a model 70 in that caliber. 264Win - are you shooting that caliber in that top photo? What is outside the helo on the receiving end?

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread
Since this my first year spearfishing, and it will only be my first "off season", these are some of the activities I'll enjoy.
Deer hunting in Texas - deer are not that big in central Texas. This was actually the largest they'd seen on the ranch in 15 years. Taken w/ my G3 .308 from 150yds - open sights. Cyclocross is a fall/winter discipline that incorporates road bike speeds with offroad action! www.crosscrusade.com Also this coming January, Oregon Pro Diver and myself (with our wives) are booked for 12 days in Maui. We'll be going with Jeremy Selig of www.spearfishmaui.com on two bluewater dive trips! Jeremy was the guy that taught me the sport reef diving last year. I CAN'T WAIT!!

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread
Forgot about this one! been a busy Spring/Summer....
800yrd stalk in driving sleet/rain ended in a 46yrd shot with my 44mag. Then I deboned him, strapped him to the back of a dirtbike, and road 40kms home. Some game cam shots from my "secret garden" a little alpine mulie scouting last week... and for Max - the new gig:

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread
Lots of time this summer hanging out with my sweetheart. No matter how hard I ride her, she begs for more. It's love. Meet Betty:
Here she is with brand new boots. Diablos, sticky sticky fun. 1400mi in 3 days, with a day off in Boise to hang with flight school buddies Spending lots of time with the new Niece too. I think Bikes are in her blood.

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread
Colin - Thanks for the heli photo - long lining takes a lot of skill - is that an MD500?
That is some secret garden - all those photos were taken in the exact same spot! What is that, grand central wildlife intersection? Between helicopters and motorcycles and free diving - well, you are living on the edge!
