120EX Riffe Euro - too long for SD use?

For San Diego area kelp beds and reefs, (no plans for paddy hopping) is the 120EX Riffe Euro too long/cumbersome, or OK, and why? What is the optimal length?

Bought one for my son down in SD and now not so sure it was a good choice.
(I've read lots of great advice on on optimal bands and shaft setup for it, if we keep it.)

Leigh - Oregon spearo
(Riffe Metal Tech 1S 38" with wing kit)

Can one navigate/thread such a long gun through the thick kelp off of LJ or PL ok? I guess that's my biggest concern.

Yes it will be just fine! I and others i dive with use anywhere from 120's-145's depending on what we're going for that day. How old is your son? Size etc..? Whats he hunting for? Sounds like you got him a nice piece!

My son is 30, 5 ft 11, 240 lbs, so bands load should be ok. Coming down June 26th to continue his spearo education. Plan to yak out to the LJ kelp on that Friday, 1st time for both of us. We've done CP shore dive 2x, last time I visited. Smaller SD fish, up to WSB. It has a Riffe reel.
Btw, the production values on your vids is really nice!
