Re: Killing lobster

A friend of mine used to put a fillet knife between their eyes and then slice up and down. Every once in a while when I'm feeling mushy I do this. It does stop them almost in their tracks - their seems to be some slight residual movement afterwards but it's a big difference from a flipping bug to almost nothing.

Yep. Agreed

Make sure next time the teapot screams you chop it with a hatchet. And for god sakes when you prepare to brake hard in your car stab your tires .

I bury them in ice for an hour, then any of the usual methods. They're as close to comatose as you can get and don't seem to mind whatever comes next.

Re: Killing lobster

if you can make a little room in your freezer, throw them in there for a bit, and they're not very active anymore, it's best to have a separate area, they poke holes in stuff you have in bags.

This.

Chill-killing them is the best. The meat doesn't stick to the shell and it doesn't degrade at all

Re: Killing lobster

Sometimes I"ll talk smack to them about bringing them over to my mother-in-laws for a few hours and then they jump right in the boiling pot. Go figure

I just don't what anything to suffer, including me when it's my time, like I said I brain my fish, but I don't brain abalone, I don't know how.
I guess I should not say I don't like anything to suffer, because I will catch an annoying fly, remove it's wings and let it live.

Re: Killing lobster

I forgot the most important part: mix in a 12 pack of pacificos with the ice and lobster. When the bottles are the same temp as the bugs, crack open a beer and get to work.

Re: Killing lobster

The freezer takes longer but works also.

I usually prefer to shuck the tail then use the antennae to clean out the intestines though.

Here's a youtube tutorial: Spiny Lobster Cleaning Clinic - YouTube
Works the same for California Spiny Bugs
