All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective. |

Fiberglass Spear modification (re-design)
One of my dive buddies has 8-9 fiberglass three piece polespears that seem to have the issue of breaking at the joints. They are those yellow fiberglass three piece polespears that you used to be able to find at any big box diving shop in Florida or scuba shops on the west coast. I asked him what he was going to do with the ones that he broke, and he agreed to let me see if I could repurpose one.
First idea was to make a 5ft hapa spear by epoxying the glass tube inside of aluminum tube and calling it a day, but things got interesting when I finished the 5ft mods and dry fitted it.. I started thinking about all the cool things I could do to make it awesome, like adding a roller or ballasting the front end with solid rod etc... It was only a moment later that I decided that because I lent all my polespears out I needed something in the 7-8ft range that I could throw in the corner and let someone borrow in case they didn't have a spear or are just learning and don't want to go out and buy one.. I ended up with this: Hopefully I'll get to test it out soon. P.S. Thanks Aaron Crist and John (Linghunt) for the great advice you've given me over the past year. |
