Bluewater Spearing - Upper Keys in December

Hello,

I will be renting a 23' CC in December (around xmas). Mostly going to stick to the reefs but I would like to head to the blue water as well. As someone with 0 experience blue water fishing, I am hoping to gain an understanding from this site. Is it just a question of finding the birds and weeds? Bring flashers? Assume I don't have the requisite rod n reel gear to troll, but that I do have requisite spear gear. Any info would help. Thanks.

Offshore in December is an iffy thing. The wx can be very bad. On the reef, there are plenty of lobsters thanks to the hurricane wrecking the traps. For wahoo, you will be in 140 to 220 feet near structure. That is just over the Reef edge and maybe a half mile out from there. Look for wahoo around the deep wrecks. My son uses 5-6 old cds in mono under a float maybe 50 feet down in a chain. Good luck

It's a good time for hoos and reef fish alike if the weather is good

Hey if you need extra pair of fins and guns, count me in. I'll carry my fair share and am willing to dive anywhere. But sounds like a solid plan, if you can find structure like they said about 150 or so feet youll get pelagics swimming at different levels. Flashers = better success in my opinion.

Thank you everyone for the responses. Divermaker would be happy to dive with you sometime but we will have a full boat. I will definitely holler at you next time around.

Didnt see anything about weed lines. Are those not as productive in winter? Would love to shoot some dolphins and tripletails.

Thanks, here's my number 954-261-5487.

Weedlines are usually a more sure thing instead of going randomly in the blue. Over here in the Hollywood area found a nice weed patch trolled along it but didn't get anything, some guy did line up a ton of mahi on it, but weedlines are structure in a sense so if you can find them no reason not to check them out.

And sometimes the mahi wont eat anything because their bellies are full so the only way to get them is to jump in and shoot them. Also there is a good chance that wahoo will be down deep so bring your flashers and cum.

Maybe he meant both. You never know what those fish might be in the mood for.

Whats the deal with tripletails? Can you shoot em in federal waters? I know you can't in state.

Ok to shoot in federal waters, just don't stop and spear in state waters on your way back in.

Flashers will work well on the drop-off in the 90-200 ft range so you might have a shot at wahoo and anything else in the area. A little chum or chunked dead bait is always helpful as is live chum if you can get it.
