Yeah, you're right. A lot of people use reels..... definitely a lot riskier than a float line. I guess it's all a calculated risk. I know in Europe that's all they use. I'm just not a huge fan of them. I've seen many things go wrong. There definitely is a learning curve to use them effectively. I don't think people realize that. Peace, Errol BTW... You're still the mutton king!

It is riskier than a floatline for sure. You could always let go of your gun and deal with it later. A reel requires a little more work but once you use it enough, the risk is very little.
Some of the med guys shoot fish at 140ft with a reel. They even shoot big AJs near those depths.

Re: Big Barracuda shot in 80' under the wreck!
Maybe it depends where you're shooting but even if i got a reel, i would probably keep my float line. I like to have the buoy with my stringer tied off to it - btw, one of the best $15 iv spent so far has been on one of these, borrow an angle grinder and sharpen the tip first. They have many uses, my friend lost his spear (the crimp failed when he missed a shot) last dive, he was helping us and filming us dive for the rest of the day and we tied off his gun to my buoy. They can be a little bit of a drag but you strengthen up to it - like driving a car without power steering, which i also do! haha.

Dirty George! Nice to see a good guy get a nice fish.
Without too much detail, when comparing set ups, remember that you may not be comparing apples to apples. Each set up has a specific application, sometimes they spill over, or become preference. It may not be the arrow, but the Indian.
