Middle Grounds, First Timers

My neighbor and I and a few others are planning our first trip to the MGs this weekend. We are leaving out of Dunedin on a 36' Yellowfin with trips (just got it a few months ago!).
We will mostly be fishing, but plan to dive if it looks good. We have a general plan but do not have any specific numbers to dive on.
We were planning on using our chart and finding structure with the fish finder. However, I'd feel a whole lot better if we had a good starting point.
Anyone willing to give up their honey-hole, or even a decent spot? (GPS coordinates) Also we welcome any advice for the trip.

Just find a depth you like and a good fish show and jump in.

Good luck with those numbers I gave you - and as jfjf said, you should have no issue once you get in the general area of the MGs as there are TONS of ledges, tells, wrecks, etc. out there.

I was hoping to go this weekend too. But weather is all over the place.

What depths are you comfortable diving in? Are you diving Nitrox?

The south Grounds are deep, up to 140fsw on sand.

The north has a west ridge and an east ridge. Both are shallower, 85-90' on top and 110-120 on sand.

I would look for the smaller ledges and structure with good fish shows

Look for small reefs in the shallower areas...and of course fish shows.

Let me know how it is I've always wanted to dive the MG but heard mixed reviews. I'm jealous of your ride

Re: Middle Grounds, First Timers

you can head 300 degree out of john pass and once your 80 to 90 miles out your in the middle of the grounds.. there is multiple ledges all over the grounds.. once your have a starting point watch your recorder anytime you move the boat.. you will find numbers all day long.. I like to fish the smaller ledges.. 10 footers or so.. but most of the relief if going to be 20 foot plus ledges,... easy to find.. also fish most spots that have fish shows as you drive over them.. usually that is mango's, AJ's, and groupers... good luck and post pictures!!!

Here you go... The north corners are 28-45.00’N by 84-13.00’W and 28-45.00’N by 84-30.00’W. The south corners are 28-15.00’N by 83-57.00’W and 28-15.00’N by 84-16.00’W.

Re: Middle Grounds, First Timers

when you get to the lower longitude number your on the edge heading west.. and take it to the higher longitude number.. that's the west side.. watch your recorder between these and your recorder will light up with ledges.. also fish the west side area.. less pressure
