Turbo rig hook

So it turns out ~9000lbs of boat and gear was too much for my rig hook and snubber. The snubber only lasted a few minutes in some moderate chop. Then the next trip was downright rough and with no snubber on the spectra line, the boat was slamming so hard against the rig hook it was knocking me and my passengers clean off our feet and the rig hook straightened out to the point out wouldn't hold.

solution........ buy an innner-tube for a tractor tire and double it up to serve as a heavy duty snubber and reinforce the rig hook with 3/4" pipe and 1/2X2 flat bar.Click image for larger version

I've used the inner-tubes before, works pretty good but I still have little trust in a rig hook. Don't want to surface to find that my boat is a mile away. It'll ruin your day.

Re: Turbo rig hook

Yeah, I've seen a lot of lines chafe through on those rusty rig bits. A length of chain in the center of a doubled up nylon line might be a winner....

Re: Turbo rig hook

Try this. Get a gallon antifreeze jug and fill it about 1/2 full of water. Tie 50' of 1/8" nylon rope to the handle. Tie the other end to a tie off rope twice as long as you want to be from the rig. Throw the jug over any cross member on the platform. When it hits the water it will float back toward the boat. Pick it up with a boat hook and pull the tie off rope over the cross member and cleat it off. When you are ready to leave, untie one end and pull it back over the cross member and you are free. It is cheap and works great.

Re: Turbo rig hook

I made a quick run on Saturday. Went old school and just tired off to the boat landing. My wife had to catch the bitt. Getting tired in want bad but getting off seemed like it took a half hour. She has no concept of how to flip the eye of the line off the bitt. The bad part is we had an audience when leaving.....

Re: Turbo rig hook

Solution, teach her to drive the boat. Mine always drives on and off trailer, always impressed the old guys ramp watching, they would say they need to get a woman like that! We always used boat power to help the truck get started up the ramp (heavy boat). On day I got a call from a friend and he asked if I had been to a certain rig the day before (I had). He said the rig workers told him he needed to get a woman like the guy that was there yesterday! He thought it might be me and it was. I have tried everything and really like double lining (rope up around and back) if it gets rough all you do is untie line from boat you don't have to get close to the rig! Rig hooks have caused many injuries. Rope is cheap!

Re: Turbo rig hook

She crashed her car twice in the one year she has been driving. No way in hell I'm letting her try to Jockey a single screw inboard boat next to a rig.
