All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

Thinking of getting a PoleSpear

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of getting a PoleSpear but I need some help. I've been spearfishing with a speargun for more than 20 years but never tried a PoleSpear. Could someone explain the pros/cons, the different techniques (anything that is different from using a speargun), things to look for when buying a PoleSpear, etc?

I heard that you need to get up closer to fish, is this true? Do any of you use resting hooks? Not even sure you are supposed to have the spear "loaded" or if this is done just when you need to shoot.

For info I am looking at getting a Neritic but I am open to suggestions. I need to travel my plane to hunt so it needs to fit in a suitcase (I'd like to use it when traveling light w/out my SporTube). I hunt along rocky shores/reefs.

Thank you!

Re: Thinking of getting a PoleSpear

I got a Riffe 8' long. The longer the better for reach/long shots. But 2 long and it's complicated for the holes, caves, etc. On my 8', I can take out a 2' section so it's perfect.
I love my Riffe but it's expensive. From what I hear, the Mako is a good deal.
I tried the resting hook but took it off. It's easy to load even while diving.
Pros: easy to reload and take a second shot - Safer
Cons: reach

I use mine;
- in the Bahamas
- in Canada in the St-Laurence river where the viz is crap and the Black Bass are just to dumb so the pole gives it a chalenge but even then.. LOL
- With my kids because it's safer then a loaded gun
Other than that, I use my speargun.

For travel, I got the Riffe CastOff travel bag. I can fit 2 pairs of long fins and my pole spears and all the rest of my gear. I think it travels better than my sportube no2. Rolls better, more room, easier to open and close at customs.

Enjoy !

Re: Thinking of getting a PoleSpear

Yes, I do.. it’s fun. But since I only travel 2-3 weeks per year, I also love using my speargun .. =)
