Scallops anyone???
Hey everyone,
O.K. here we go......Any suggestions on where to go for scallops around the Puget Sound? I have heard San Jauns, Deception Island and a few other places that I have forgotten the name of. Secondly, which are better? The rocks, or the swimming, and what's the big difference? Stubbie |

Re: Scallops anyone???
I have been looking really hard for scallops all around the south sound, and I've never found one... just a couple of shells. Although I'm freediving so I usually don't go deeper than 60' or so. But they seem to be pretty hard to find in the sound. Deception pass/deception island is supposed to be great but I've never been there. Basically look for a spot with rocks and as much current as possible, that's what seems to be good habitat. and let me know if you find some

Re: Scallops anyone???
For quantity, you'll want the hard rock areas from North end Whidbey on up into the San Juans. They are pretty rare South of that. Most people, if they have them, are pretty guarded on their spots. Both types are delicious. Rocks are great raw or pan fried real fast. I steam the swimming ones to get them to open up, clean out the meat, and eat it straight, in ceviche, or mixed in rissotto.
Good luck. |

Re: Scallops anyone???
i usually find my best scallops on hard rock, and very steep faces. places with a very steady current, especially downflow. usually in the 60-75' range. makes them quite the trophy when freediving...

Re: Scallops anyone???
I love popping a scallop during a dive and eating it sea otter-style mid-dive. Its delicious, it provides a much needed energy boost while diving cold water, and it makes me feel like badass.
(Note: I added [scallops] to your quote, because before it read "rocks are great raw", which I would definitely argue is not the case ) |
