todays dive report (1-5-03)
went out today to do a little spearfishing, and line fishing. todays crew: Pogie, myself, and a friend of ours jon (chapper from the fs forum). we went out on jon's 24' morgan. the water wasnt really that rough, about 1-2 foot rollers with an occasional 3 or 4 footer mixed in there. after we got to our first spot, the water calmed down to almost glass.
the first spot we went to was about 6 miles out. that was one shitty dive. the current was ripping, and there was no vis. when i mean no vis, i could hardley see the tip of my 48" commercial speargun. i didnt stay down for too long, since i could never find any structure. i was way off. my dumb ass went swimming the wrong way. by the time i decided to surface, after seeing nothing related to a rock or ledge, i was a good 55 yards away from the boat. swimming to the boat with ripping current is not cool. the second dive spot was about 17 miles out, and things were looking good. before suiting up and jumping in, we decided to fish a little, and let the fish get closer to the boat. we were pulling up short gag after short gag. finally when we started catching keepers, and pogie got broken off by a moster, it was time to go spearfishing. the vis was much better on this dive; about 7 feet. the dive was a on a nice ledge in 80' of water. pogie and i started in the same direction, and then went our seperate ways. i didnt find any fish worth shooting, but pogie said that he saw a good number of nice gags just out of shooting range. we came up empty handed, but i enjoyed the dive, especialy because i got to use my new speargun. the water was freezing cold (60) and would have been well worth it if we would have shot some fish. i think its time to invest in a hoodie and a 5mil wetsuit. i think we would have done better if the water was a little bit clearer, and we hit the spot at a better time of day (we went in the water about 3:30 on the 2nd dive). im looking forward to getting back out there, hopefully next weekend, and the condtions are a little more optimal. the spot shows some promise, and im sure it will be very productive in the future. anyone else happen to get out there today, or this weekend? i know the conditions were not all that great, but diving is diving, and its better than sitting at home doing nothing or yard work... |
