NOAA Buoy 42036
I was going to monitor that buoy while Alberto blows thru. The buoy is approx. 110 nm west of Tampa. Lots of us use it especially for MG trips. Buoy has been down since 11/27/18 . Not even on the maintenance list yet. Wonder if their budget got cut?

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
I wish they would use the money to fix the buoys instead of species closures and buying new boats, and boarding my boat and measuring my fish.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
LOL diverJim! For sure.
Yeah, the dive community do like to use whatever resources we can to plan a safe trip sharpshooter. Not sure why that buoy would be allowed to sit non-functional for 6 months. Was looking to take off Fri if I can get a ride to go get some gags, but more concerned about viz. Seas look like they should cooperate for opening day. |

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
Forecast for now is Friday and Saturday are the 2 days for lower seas. Then, it picks right back up. With high seas and rain water drainage from the main land. I agree, the inshore vis will suffer.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
This weather is so damn frustrating this year. I've got off June 2-11 but right now the forecast looks really bad for Sun-Tues at least for next week

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
This Friday and Saturday still look good. Sucks after that till about June 7th. In the last few years. My dive buddies and I have seen plenty of gags till opening day. Then, a few days later all gone. Except, for the little ones. This Friday and Saturday seas will be low. Who knows how many people will be out? You will have fisherman and divers in private boats. You will have fisherman in charter and party boats with federal reef permits that can get BOTH gags and ARS starting June 1st. A 10 day head start on ARS vs. the recreational. Just look at Hubbards and Gulf Star Fishing Charters trip schedule. Plus, all the others in the charter business. They are running everything they got after ARS and gags. Plenty of Elbow and MG trips too. Not knocking them or the charter industry. They have to make a living too. Just stating the facts. Am sure those of you that wait for this event every year. Have seen it too. In a few days the gag pickings are slim. Also, good luck to all those in the TBSC this saturday.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
I was not aware NOAA operated all these buoys that they do. I will have to monitor some of the relevant ones near me.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
Well, they finally put it on the repair list for October 2018. It went down 11/27/17. Yep, typical gov't. response time vs. the private sector.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
Just a status update. Still on the maintenance list to be replaced. At least #42036 has moved up to #2. All these fronts coming thru aren't helping to get out there. I sure missed the data from that buoy this summer planning MG trips. Especially, before making the long run out.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
Just a crumb of additional info, but we saw the Coast Guard buoy tender ship go past us this week as we were diving off Jupiter. He was moving south and didn't see any new/used/other buoy's on his front or rear deck. Hey,,,atleast the repair ship is spotted in Florida and not sitting in the Great Lakes.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
Bad news. Buoy 42036 went from being number 2 to be replaced/fixed to about number 17. Also, no exchange/repair date given. Hopefully, it'll be done by spring. Down since, 11-27-17. Great buoy for offshore/MG info when it's working.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
I was just thinking about the MG diving for this summer. Checked on the NOAA buoy maintenance list. The list goes out to June 2019 for scheduled repairs. #42036 (The MG Buoy) is on the list. But, no exchange date. it's been down since, 11-27-17.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
Checked today and can't believe it's scheduled for exchange next month---June 2019. About time. Been down since 11-27-17. Great reference for MG trips.

Re: NOAA Buoy 42036
The buoy was scheduled for this month to be exchanged after being down since 11-27-17 with several delays and rescheduling. I had to look twice after doing a search tonight. It's been exchanged and is transmitting data. This is a great weather tool for those of us that go to the MG. We just call it the MG Buoy.
