Good idea with a metal hoop stringer, wouldn't do it with a mono stringer though. They can bite straight through it.

I love all the comments about them being assholes after you shoot them... Well you just shot them. I think we should be lucky every fish doesn't bight the shit out of us when we shoot them. I'm guessing there would be a lot more Cuda's, Cuberas, etc... swimming around

I didn't realize how many people liked to eat triggers. It is my favorite fish for Ceviche besides yellow jack.

Shoot lots of gray triggers in the summer here in NJ favorite fish to shoot! There is a soft spot right behind there pectoral fin you can poke easily through it and fillet from the inside out.

I had one latch on to my finger this week when i was pulling the spear out of its head and then it tried to get me again when I was cleaning it. The grey triggers have teeth that curve back so you cant get out but their still my favorite fish to shoot and eat.

looks like we all have experienced a triggers revenge.. i was videoing and one bit the housing .. they got no class... we found you got the most meat by chopping of the fins and head then peeling the remainder like a banana . cooking it whole in a frame and eating carefully... gb

Not so much bone crunching but think in chunks. They rip out a hunk of meat. My buddy shot a nice gag and it got stuck under a ledge. He always wears a hood and when he was struggling with the gag and the shaft wedged under the coral, I saw a flash towards his head and a stream of green. Trigger took 3/4 square inch of meat off of him just above his right eye. Almost to the bone.
BTW I use a box cutter to score the skin and lift off. Great eating fish.

This thread so old that I forget whether I've said it here, but when I was a kid back in the early 1950s I read about a school of triggerfish nibbling an Air Force guy to death in Puerto Rico.

I'm glad I looked here. Thanks for the advice guys. I shot one On Sunday with a buddy of mine, and he mentioned he thought they wern't any good. Another person thought they were poisonous. Anyone got anything to say about triggers in Hawaii?

If you see the large black one with pink/white by the tail, they taste pretty good. The Broom fish is another one that not too many people know about. (Because it's ugly) But give em a try! You'll be surprised!

They're extremely abundant in the Red Sea as no one here eats them and they come in big sizes as well. I'm gonna try one after reading those comments!

Re: Triggerfish good eating? They ugly bastards. . .

My horror story: After I shot a big Trigger, The fish was not moving at all, I stupidly reached around the fish to depress the tines of the spear tip, the fish exploded to life and bit a huge chunk from the inside of my wrist!
Just a centimeter deeper and the tendons would have been severed.
Very sobering.

Delicious, but vengeful little bastards! They'll bite anything nearby after they're shot (understandably). Firm white meat makes some awesome ceviche!!!
