Center of mass located above the center of bouncy.
The design is inherently neutrally unstable. ( unless the barge was filled with ballast) it had but choice but to role over.

It wont be as pretty to the eyes but the fish will like it all the same. It will still be a great dive sight to explore.

I checked out the dixie diver facebook page there was some mention of maybe trying to roll it over. Being a Deerfield Resident I feel they spent so much money already it makes no sense not to invest some coins in getting it back upright.

Good for them.

They have a wealthy benefactor who spent $500 grand of her own money. I can't imagine those statues costing that much to replace.

Heck, salvagers raise big ships all the time. This might be an easy salvage job on that barge. But, the statues are another matter.

I wish them the best of luck fixing this problem.

Re: Tragedy for Giant Easter Island-inspired reef off Deerfield Beach, Florida

I know when I still worked for the city on the beach there in Deerfield Beach the Deerfield Beach Nautical Society was pushing to make Deerfield "A true Nautical Destination" (I have no idea what that means) but all the city Big Wigs seemed to be behind it 100% so I'm sure they'll figure out some sort of solution. If something is going to happen I'd ask Pavan from Dixie Divers as I'm sure he'll be connected to it somehow.

My Inlaws just bought a condo in Deerfield Beach so I'm looking forward to diving with Pavan again! They are an enthusiastic group of divers at Dixie so anything is possible.

big ass lift bags will flip it, but the cost is going to be even more impressive. OTOH a couple simple oil country rig assembly cranes could reposition it for not much more than twice the original project cost, if there were any in the area. Given the attitude of the governments of both FL and the present administration to offshore oil that isn't likely to happen either.

That area gets some serious surge during named storms. What that will do to the positioning is anyone's guess. In any case the current safe haven for bugs and other crevice dwellers will be a good thing.

Interesting comment in the youtube video. It just proves a bunch of idiots planned this. They should be held accountable and pay to fix it from their own pockets.

PS: The engineer who was involved, Boca Raton engineer Rick Iossi, should trash his diploma and quit.

Nice video guys, thank you for sharing.
But, I must tell you I am still very upset about the outcome.
As a submarine builder, I was very concerned, so I went to Dixie divers shop approximately a month ago to tell them that it would flip over.

I ask them if there was some way that could contact Margaret Bloom.Their answer was "No."
When I told them why I would like to speak with her, I was told not to worry about it.
I was told by the guy's at the store that they will be using two big crane barges to gently lower it to the bottom.
Did they plan on using cranes to lower it?
Now, I am just so very very disappointed with the City of Deerfield beach for not making sure that it would be done properly and or safely.

This was quite the risk....You would think the idea of sinking the barge than installing the "art work" would have been the safer option.

Re: Tragedy for Giant Easter Island-inspired reef off Deerfield Beach, Florida

Any idea what went into the original project cost of $500k? I suspect permitting was a lot, but an old barge and some concrete statues doesn't seem like either of those would be a couple hundred grand.
