Aimrite Double Roller vs. Coatesman Double Roller

Hey guys,

Im in need for a new blue water cannon as my buddy let my gun drift away after shooting his first kingfish a couple of days ago. Ive played around with rollers in the past and I like the concept of them especially for pelagics. Although ive only shot some small snappers and a couple of groupers with rollers, I wanna spend the money and get something real nice for blue water. I was thinking a 130 double roller. The only problem is im torn between the aimrite double roller and the Coatesman double roller on a carbon Rob Allen. Ive seen videos of both of the guns taking down dogtooth tuna and other big pelagics so they are both powerful and will get the job done. Anyone have any experience with either or both of the guns? Pros and cons to each?

Thanks

Re: Aimrite Double Roller vs. Coatesman Double Roller

I don’t have experience with either of those rollers, but I do have some experience with the aimrite reverse trigger mech. I bought one from Aimrite Australia about a year and a half ago as a drop in replacement for the standard mech on my Aimrite 120. The reverse mech trigger pull is smooth and easy, but in my opinion the distance to pull it is way excessive to release the spear. Unless that has changed, I’d go with the Rob Allen

You could probably build & rig the Rob Allen version yourself for a lot less. Plus you have more options with different brand roller muzzles.

Yeah, plus about $130 for a RA handle, $50 for a barrel, plus shaft and rigging. Probably still cheaper than buying a complete gun. Some people don't want to deal with rigging and it might not be worth their time and prefer to just pay for a complete platform. Decisions, decisions...

Take a look at the MVD muzzles. I haven't use a double, but the single roller works very well.

Re: Aimrite Double Roller vs. Coatesman Double Roller

I dived with a guy using a RA 140 setup with a mannysub double roller head. It shot some nice dogtooth tuna.

Another guy had a aimrite double roller shooting a 9mm spear, it has a lot of recoil apparently and shot very low.

Why not go a inverted roller, they are proven for bluewater hunting. I have seen a RA converted to inverted roller.

Re: Aimrite Double Roller vs. Coatesman Double Roller

Those pipe guns you mentioned were never designed to handle shafts bigger than 7mm, may be 7.5
If you want to shoot 8.5-9mm go for heavier inverters, e.g. new Andre 150 inverted..
