I am a few hours north, and the local captains dont mind too much about billfish as long as we dont go on slautering missions. Billfish however are not our primary target the tunas dorado, and wahoo are our primary target off shore.

Re: Costa Rica spearfishing

my family and I are going
on a trip to los suenos in mid april. I wouldnt want to miss an amazing chance
to spearfish in costa rica so i plan to bring my dive gear. My only problem is i
have no idea of what im doing down there. I have no clue where to go, what type
of wet suit i need. Basically im hopless im sure my best bet would be to hook up
with some sort of a charter or local person who could help me out and i was
wondering if you had any references? I wouldnt mind spending money on a charter
because my parents have told me it would be my graduation present. If you have
any insight on anything i could need to know or who could help me out please let
me know

Re: Costa Rica spearfishing

Ryan,

I recieved word from Enrique at Herradura Divers. He tells me that Sailfish are Tag and Release only and they don't normally take out spearfishermen. He also says the viz is not that great and the Triggerfish, that my buddy Jonathan saw down there aren't that big, only 2 pounds. He also says they don't have a certified scale.

I probably need to talk to someone else, I can't stand going on a vacation and someone trying to handle me, especially in the dive world.

Is there a place I can rent my own boat down there? If so what are the lisencing requirements?

Either that or we need somebody that's sort of a renegade with a bad ass boat.

Wouldn't they have a certified scale in a market or something down there? Our scale weighs like 10lbs. and will be a pain in the ass to pack all the way there.

Down there they are a lot more hardcore on the billfish tag and realese, up here it is not as big of a deal. However we dont market billfish, there are exceptions from time to time. As far as renting a boat, not likely, and if somebody is ok with it, the are no requirements to drive a boat here! As far as my Charter company Agua Azul Charters, we like to think of ourselves as (renagade) or extreame sportfishing, and spearfishing. We also do surf tours, and are willing do combo trips. My scales should be here in a couple weeks, that way we can make those records count!

Re: Costa Rica spearfishing

Someone told me my best bet would be to take the ferry across the sound and drive up your way. How long will that take us from Jaco, and do you have any openings between Friday and Sunday?

Also, what kind of dollar amount am I loking at?

Will my cell phone work down there, if so we can make arrangements once we get there also?

I had some prices up on an earlier post when i used another boat( a small panga) now i have a 23ft criss craft. The current price is 650.00 per day, but that is all day. Jaco is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours south of Nosara! I am available on Friday, and i have a trip on sunday already. If you did bring your scale i am sure one of us down here would buy it off you as well. You can take the ferry accross but it might add some time to your drive, there is the Tampiske bridge that will make your trip a little faster!
Thanks hope to see you guys up here! Oh, your cell phone it just depends on what kind it is, and where it is from.

Re: Costa Rica spearfishing

In Herradura Beach, on the same road to Los Suenos about 1/4mi before resort entrance on the right, there is a scuba shop ran by Italians, they all freedive spearfish and can set you up (they spear on scuba too, but not often). Light suit as water is warm, bring your belt and get weights from them, I paid $240 for 6 hour trip last year. Panguero, plus guy from dive shop and myself as divers. Good times
