Kayak Questions

For my kayak, I have a combination depthfinder/gps. In the rules, it looks like the only electronics allowed is a gps.

1. Can I use the unit as is?
2. If not, can I disable the transducer (pull it out of it's well and zip-tie it up in a bag)? My particular unit has a single wiring harness for the transducer and the power, so I can't just remove the transducer from the unit.

Also, what are the local conditions like for keeping fish? Do I need a fishbag with ice on the kayak, or are the conditions cool enough that the fish will be fine for the duration of the tournament?

Thanks for any answers.

Re: Kayak Questions

I'm going to have to ask that question regarding having a depthfinder on your kayak the day of the meet. Will get back to you on that. You don't need a bag or ice to have your fish on the kayak. What we do is have fish stringers set up on the kayak that when we are on the water we have the fish over the kayak and in the water to keep the fish fresh. Then when you start going to another location, you pick up your fish on throw it on your kayak till you get to the other location.

Re: Kayak Questions

The only electronics allowed to be used in the nationals is a GPS only. No phones, radios, depth finders or fish finder. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks.

Re: Kayak Questions

Thanks for the info on the fish. Around here during the summer, if you kept your fish in the water off your kayak, you'd be in for a really "interesting" day.

One last question of the GPS unit. Since I can't remove the transducer without physically cutting the power/transducer harness, can I completely disable the transducer so that I can use only the GPS? I can wrap the transducer in bubble wrap (transducers don't work through air gaps) and secure it with zip ties or duct tape, and leave it loose inside the kayak (or even tape it to the outside of the head unit).

If that doesn't comply with the rules, that's fine I'll do something else. I'm just trying to find out if I can use it without having to buy a handheld or a new $100 power/transducer unit. Thanks.

Re: Kayak Questions

That's fine to disable the transducer and wrap it with bubble wrap. I will take your word that you did this on your kayak. You don't have to spen money on a new GPS. Thank you and see you next week.

Best Regards
