Science says there really is a way to get over the common cold faster, and bring it on!

"No matter what, zinc lozenges helped patients recover from a cold three times faster."

Here's a link to the Helsinki University report of the findings, (which further links to the actual study... which is behind a paywall).

Zinc swabs destroyed 80% of my olfactory and now I can hardly smell a thing.

Sorry to hear that Kmoose. That really sucks. I had heard the older ones had zinc. The newer nasal swabs do not and they seem to work for me.

If I have a cold and HAVE to dive.. I put a fat booger of Vick's VapoRub in the nose of my mask.. and take Sudafed 30 mins to and hour beforehand. Thankfully.. I don't HAVE to dive sick anymore since I'm not commercial.

Afrin knockoff for diving, zinc gluconate spray or lozenges for colds.Coldeze is pretty reasonable.Swabbing mucous areas when ill is a great way to spread germs.

I'm on zinc right now prepping for tomorrow's trip. I have sudafed ready to go for the day-of.

I like this new Zicam - dissolves in about 5 seconds, tastes good, CVS carries. Powder like Pixie Stix:

You can also take ibuprofen or acetaminophen with the pseudoephedrine / sudafed to relieve the headache...

I don't know about that stuff Zicam. There are some pretty damning articles about it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zicam

https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevens.../#3cf3e63c4701

Might want to do just a little more investigating into that product. Or for that matter any zinc product

Nah, even your articles only cite the nasally-applied version as being risky for destroying your sense of smell, which Kenny said happened to him. I'm not a fan of shooting things into my nose in general - I have a hard enough time getting stuff out. I only buy the lozenges and now the powder that dissolves in your mouth. You'll never catch me snorting anything....

So, I'm spending a little money to possibly get better faster.

And my sense of smell is fine - I just tested it in the bathroom.

What I've heard of Zicam is that it can kill your taste. I haven't heard anything about smell. I thought that was including the tablets too, but could be wrong. I wonder if there is any truth to that. Either way it has scared me enough to not use it. Airborne is what I use instead.

I don't know of any information about it being long-term harmful to your taste buds. It isn't entirely pleasant to eat - it's not candy, it does leave a funny aftertaste - but I've never heard of zinc being accused of causing tastebud damage.

Re: As divers, we dread catching a cold, but ..........

The info I could have received could have been the result of a bad game of telephone. I was just reaching for it, was told that, then reached for the Airborne instead. Did absolutely zero research, but wasn't going to roll the dice either with other options available.
