Re: Question On Lookdowns
Never speared one but I have caught a lot of them practicing with my 6 weight flyrod around docks at night.
Meat is great. If you keep the bigger ones and just cut back through the forehead and down behind the gills and then gut them you get a fair amount of meat. I generally caught them waiting for a Snook or Tarpon to show under a light. They are fun on light tackle and helps pass time till the target fish feed. The Jacks and Spadefish I gave to a Jamaican buddy of mine. When I told him I didnt shoot them he asked me to get him some and he would clean them.On bad days I would load him up a 33 gallon garbage can of jacks, spadefish, grunts and porgies.Grunts and porgies were nice but the other stuff needed smoked and a lot of beer to wash it down.

Re: Question On Lookdowns
Maybe I had a time in my life when food was in short supply or I have no taste buds but I have always enjoyed fresh fish of any kind.

Re: Question On Lookdowns
Lookdowns are fantastic, more similar to pompano than not.
Small cuda's are excellent eating but stink like crap in the cooler. Once went hook and line and had 15 people to feed. Caught one small red, one small dolphin, one rainbow runner and about 8 small cudas. Knew my crew would either sneer or reject the cuda altogether so concocted a story that it was "Atlantic Whitefish". They gobbled it up and when I asked which they liked best the all selected the cuda. I went to the table with one last plate that just came off and asked who wanted more and they all eagerly said yes. I then owned up to the story as I put the plate down on the table and not a single person wanted another piece. They had it and loved it until they knew what it was. So I have a crevalle recipe but it works for bonitas too. You cook the fish on a wet wooden cedar plank like they do with wild salmon. Once cooked, you toss the fish and eat the plank. |

Re: Question On Lookdowns
Love Cuda. Cutting the heads off removes the stink.
