Keep your expectations on a leash. Go slow and methodically. Trust me, the times are a changing. Study every life decision. Don't believe the MSM hype. Question everything. Start seeking the real truth early. It will keep you out of a rut. Damn, I wish I had the opportunity to ask a capable audience the same question as this guy at his age. Mad props to you for having the smarts/humility to ask.

Learn a good trade...even the union...a degree is either your banking or your not...unless your a sniper at what your going for and are the shiz at it..your not gonna make bank...a trade will always keep you working and most you can make great money..electrical....welding etc. ..become union at your age...by 26 or 27 you will be sitting pretty on a cloud of money.

I would not recommend pursuing an education and then career in something you think is boring from the get-go.

Re: What do you guys do?
x2, don't do something that you'd find boring. By all means try it out, you might just like it, but find something that you like doing. You'll live a much happier life. All the money you'd earn as a software engineer won't count for shit if you don't enjoy that line of work.

Bazillion college degrees out there flipping burgers, waiting for that gold option to open. I've been doing iron work for over 40yrs. Have a family full of union electricians, they are on the crest of cashing in on that sweet pension. Myself, if I knew then what I know now, I would have gone marine academy. Gotten a ticket, and spent my life on the sea, or maybe doing what Ron does, salvage. As it turned out, knew only what I did at that time and went for land based iron. Been a great trade, and I know how to do shit that 95% of the people will never know, not even talking about experiences building ski lifts and such. Thing is, don't be afraid to step into the trades or craftsmen. They are vanishing in this country, and I can guarantee they will always be needed, regardless of whats happening in the tech world.

Re: What do you guys do?
Being in a union sounds appealing to me, i would enjoy work that doesnt involve sitting behind a desk all day, so i would need to go to a special school to be in a union or something? Not exactly sure what a union is

Great example of that is myself. I was a sports jock and in high school is was all about weight lifting and football. I ran with the normal crowd and made fun of the typical geeks. I went into college with the idea of following in my uncles foot steps and pursuing business while playing football. My freshman year I got hurt before the season even start, my first real injury every playing a sport since I started soccer at the age of 7. It was devastating but allowed me to look into opportunities I never would have given a second look. To fill up my time I took an acting class for units and to fill up a time gap between classes. I took on the class thinking it was an easy 3 units and maybe I could meet some cute nerdy thespian to fool around with . I ended up enjoying the damn class and for some damn reason, I was good at acting! I ended up getting my A.A. in Theater Arts and without a doubt it has been the biggest help with not only who I am as a person, but how I represent myself across the many different jobs I have had since. As I write this, I am actually anxiously crossing my fingers to hear if I will be getting a 14 month acting contract in Tokyo, something I have been trying to get for 4 years. My chances are very high (I'd say 85% I get it) and the opportunity would of never presented itself if I stuck with business and played football Point is you never know what you will enjoy. At your age it is best to see what life will throw at you, otherwise you are going to try and throw yourself on top of a life that you might regret. |

Re: What do you guys do?
Furthermore, private unions are getting massacred due to the global free market that our benevolent federal foisted upon us that gutted the middle class.
The only secure unions left are public (gov't) unions. True to the poster above, you have to remain fluid in your direction. Nothing is stable anymore. It used to be prior to all the free trade agreements.

Re: What do you guys do?
Come on Ya 'all are forgetting sumthin.....
Whatever you do....REPEAT.... 😱 Do not hook up with a girl.😍 Do not Move in Together , get a dog together get account together.😳 You will Get locked into it. You will get convinced you should have a big wedding. And all the above scenarios will go away. Get yourself set- the girl and family will happen later. 30 is good age for that. And avoid debt. Good luck. |

Here's the deal -- boats are extremely expensive whether you run them or not. You need a lot of extra coin to have a nice rig, so plan accordingly. A good paying job helps. A degree and a graduate degree may help to get you such a job. It all depends on if being a student for many years is going to work or not for you. One last piece of advice -- when the time is right (age 30 per above quote) you can fall in love with a rich girl. Last edited by TeamTriggerfish; 09-25-2013 at 11:19 PM. Reason: add |

Re: What do you guys do?
From personal experience, I would recommend finding a career that relates in some ways to your passions. If you can, find opportunities to work in that field (internships etc.) to make sure your expectations match reality before you commit.
I've had jobs that I've been paid well for and I've been relatively successful in but I've ended up hating life because my heart's really not in the activity that absorbed 40-60 hours of my time every week. I'm the kind of guy who finds it hard to fake enthusiasm for extended periods so it was tough maintaining appearances at work. I'm now in a lower paying job connected to my passion and I'm so much happier (way less stress and way more time to dive ). Fortunately, I'm in a financial position to absorb a hit in the pocket book but I could have been in much better shape had I found a career that I loved from the beginning. |
