Re: How to Question?
I think a milling machine could accomplish this. However, if the hole will be in wood you can cut the piece in half and use a router to cut a 3/4" diameter half circle into the stock 3/8" deep on both sides and then glue the pieces back together. You will be making a seam in the material but the glues and epoxies today provide a bond that is stronger that the original piece of wood...

Re: How to Question?
So you need a 3/4" diameter hole 24" deep? Get your wallet out for that drill bit. On top of that you would need a big engine lathe to drill that hole. Why not just use a 3/4" cove router bit and then and router a half circle on one side of the wood and another half circle on the other and then glue the thing around your hybrid barrrel or use rivets?

Re: How to Question?
not for a hybrid. its water ballast tubing holes. so i would need the just the bit and i have access to a lathe that might work.

Re: How to Question?
looks like i found the bit im looking for and its 25 bucks but its a few inches shorter than 24 but i think the depth it will give me will be adequate.
edit: also just found one that is 24inches long at 45 bucks will consult my plans to see if that extra 6 inches is going to be mandatory.

Re: How to Question?
So offset 3/4" diameter hole in wood? Now you need a four jaw chuck on that engine lathe and steel nuts.

Re: How to Question?
I drilled the hole 11" deep on my hybrid using a mill and a horizontal boring attachment, but I think the same idea could go much deeper. You said you have access to a lathe, so you could make the forstner bit extensions. You would want several, as there will be a practical limit to how far you can reach without the bar sagging. Especially with such a small diameter hole.
Using a router to cut two opposite halves and then gluing them is probably the easiest approach. One other alternative might be to use a router to make the two halves of a smaller hole (say, 1/2"). Then glue the blank together and use a long drill bit to follow your 1/2" pilot holes and enlarge them to 3/4". That would leave you a nice clean bore free of epoxy. |

Re: How to Question?
You can make an elongated hole saw out of a piece of metal tubing of the required length and diameter by cutting saw teeth into its leading edge, that will remove the central core of wood leaving the desired hole to the necessary depth.
