Idea for enclosed track

Hey i was wondering if it is possible to make an enclosed track out of some sort of piping? maybe ss or something else with just a single line cut down the legth of the pipe to allow the fins to pass through. i realize that it would be heavy but i dont think it would sink the gun. Any ideas?

Also does anyone think it would be possible to to shave a dovetail enclosed track down into more of a square shape or rectangle shape?

Or how the hell do you make a dovetail cut? this just mystifies me?

Re: Idea for enclosed track

The UHMW tracks from Neptonics can be cut down to other shapes with standard woodworking tools. If you remove the dovetail shape entirely, however, you will need to provide an alternative means to lock the track in place. The advantage to a dovetail or similar design, is that a single pin can hold it in place, since the only way it can move is lengthwise. Theoretically, this also allows the plastic track to expand at a different rate from the gun as temperature changes.

If you use a square or recactangular shape, the track could pop out of the top of the gun unless you do something to secure it. I don't think that there are many (any?) glues that would effectively hold a UHMW track in place without a locking shape. It doesn't have to be a dovetail, though. I think that Kitto and others have used a round rod of Delrin or other plastic set into and surrounded by the wood stock, with the enclosed track cut into the Delrin rod.

A stainless tube with a slot in the top could possibly be made to work if you just want to prove that it can be done. The inside diameter will have to be just right, and cutting the slot will be tough. And I'll bet it will be LOUD when that metal shaft scrapes through a metal track when you shoot...

I don't think I would use any metal for an enclosed track. Too noisy!

Gunrunner said he knew a guy once that shoots a gun made from a shower curtain rod. I'd like to see a pic of that.

You will need a router with a 1/2 collet and a guide or table to keep it straight. I was going to use that track but after advice and research I opted to pour an epoxy track and then rout out for the shaft.

I'm curious as to why you thought that was better?

I'm actually getting ready to pour an epoxy track tomorrow or Wednesday. I'll let you know how it goes. This will be a first for me.

Re: Idea for enclosed track

A lot of people that went with a pre made track had problems with the install. They said it was difficult to get it in the routed dovetail. I also have a lot of West Epoxy and the microfibers from my boating projects so I will only need to get some graphite for the mix.

Re: Idea for enclosed track

I installed a dovetail in junior high woodshop.
Step 1: cut dovetail
Step 2: offset dovetail for proper slip fit
Step 3: insert track

...EASY

Re: Idea for enclosed track

Splitfish, did you install a UHMW track, or was that a regular wood dovetail connection?

I also found that everyone reported that the track was a bit curved instead of straight stock. It was mentioned that the track looked like it came off a large roll.

UHMW Tracks. UHMW tracks really have no memory. If they are left unrestrained for a day they may take on a bow shape due to gravity.

Just the same, If you restrain them for a few hours they straighten right out.

It really is a no brainer
