Those reels corrode underwater... very quickly... i see you build guns and have experience i suppose, but using a conventional reel underwater.... i give the gears a few uses before they rust and fail... ive used that exact penn 309/levelwind on an underwater fishing rig for catching hogs within the 3 mile limit in the fl. keys... lasted a few uses... just a warning

there are two lube points on the reel. all i did was to put 3 drops of oil inside of each lube point after every use
with that way the reel was working on the gun for 7 years without problem, after that i dismantle the reel and i fill everything with marine grease ,4 years after i sold the gun because i had to many ,but the gun and the full of marine grease reel was working fine
now the gun is in new york and i dont know the wear about it

you was right the reel was not so good for the gun but not for that reason , the real was to heavy for the gun so i had to instal wings for flotation for the gun, although i used the gun for scuba
and when you scuba the gun has to sink ,but still was to heavy with that reel without wing
generally i accept that what you say is right for this particular reason
