How's it looking?! Nothing turned out the way I wanted. Nothing, took one try, but I think it looks ok... You guys think the back will hold up while loading?

Thanks apeogre! Unfortunately I ****ed it up today and I'm just gunna turn it into a wall decoration, lol. I work in a wood shop so I'm just gunna start a new one tomorrow. It's a fun way to spend my break time and keeps me from smoking so much haha I'll still post this thing when it's all finished up...

It's not to screwed up though... I can fix it as Dara the eye can tell but won't trust it under loading pressure... Didn't take any pics but I split the lamination line into one of the walnut lams at the but of the gun while pounding in my mech pin... Must've been off by a tiny bit :/ the red line in this pic represents the split... I epoxied it back together and it's clamped now...

Predrill the Mech Position Holes with the Mech in place again, if it's off slightly it will open it up just enough. Remove the mech and take a Drill and cone filing bit and countersink the holes a bit so they don't blow out when putting in the pins. Put the pins in your drill and spin them through the holes without the mech in place this way you know they going to fit nice.

Wyatt, try using a Larger Roundover bit for your side profiling and you'll probably be happy with results as will be a little less squared. Maybe try sinking that Handleframe so it's recessed flush into the stock.

Behslayer, thank you so much for the advice man! I'll take it! Haha I've been an admirer of your work for years, you make amazing guns!!! Hope I can do that one day! While I have your attention, what do you think a bout a maple and walnut blank? I work in a cabinet shop and we have lots of both... Also have hickory.. Those are the only quality hard woods though... What do you think? Also, thoughts on tight bond 2?

Re: Gun look ok?

Hi Wyatt, thanks.

Maple and Walnut sounds like it would smell good when you were making it. When it comes to North American Hardwoods, I don't know so much. I guess you would want to look at what Gunsmiths have used here for generations or consult with the guy in your shop who knows the Most about woods. The main thing to consider would be Dimensional Stability. I wouldn't worry sooo much about Specific Gravity as none of those woods are really heavy. I wouldn't worry so much about hardness, or resistance to rot as you'll be coating with Epoxy(but you will need to take care with your recesses and screw holes etc..

When it comes to your own guns for yourself you get a lot of leeway. If I were going to use an American Hardwood (I would use some of the exotics from Hawaii as those would be local to me) but if I were on the mainland, I'd try Black Locust. Shipwrights up in the North East I spoke to all said that was a timber worth trying. It's not so expensive so go with the best possible cuts and grades. But I guess I'd use up whatever I could get as offcuts from the shop you work in and when you feel like you are really happy with what you are making you will probably want to try some foreign hardwoods. That being said you can't get much cooler than a piece of Curly Maple.. as long as you can keep it straight.

Glue. If it's for yourself, I'd use Gorilla Glue or Tightbond III. I've glued up Teak blanks with Gorilla Glue which have been Brutalized in the Field for years without one issue. I've also used Resourcinol and good Heat press clamping with great results. But for my standard Blanks which I use for guns I sell I always go with the Epoxy with Filler.. and a wise man once said. "No Skimping on Epoxy"

I'd just keep doing what you are doing. Use what's available and easy, mix up your bits and try new things on every build. Just keep them Open Track until you are really happy with them and then IF you want ET..

Thanks behslayer!! I really appreciate all that knowledge!! I threw two coats of epoxy on today and it's looking sexy! For a wall hanger xD the oak has some really cool grain pattern and I lov the walnut so much!

Edit: just realized there is cross strains in the middle oak lam :( God that's ugly...

The but shaping is my favorite, even though I didn't think plan it to be this way and there isn't enough trigger clearance for a recess xD
